Alan McGowan: Moritz played in the Premier Tournament at London 1927, held alongside the Olympiad, where he scored 5/11. Appropriately, he drew with Drewitt, joint winner with William Winter, and defeated Seitz and Balogh.Moritz regularly played in the Pomeranian Chess Federation congresses, winning on several occasions. He also played in the German championships of 1923, 1925 and 1931, finishing in last place each time.
He gained entry to the Premier tournament of the London Chess League Congress in January 1939 where he scored 7/9, finishing a half-point behind William Winter, a former British champion.
While in London, he married for the second time, after which he and his bride sailed for North America, eventually making their way to Ecuador.
In 1952 Moritz won the 1st National Congress of Ecuador with 9/11, and
in 1964 he represented Ecuador at the Tel Aviv Olympiad, scoring +1, –2, =2. The draws were against IM García of Argentina and Yanofsky of Canada, who was awarded his GM title during the Olympiad.
After suffering a heart attack during the event Moritz was cared for by relatives in Tel Aviv for a few weeks before returning to Ecuador.
