ANDRE LILIENTHAL
(born May-05-1911, died May-08-2010, 99 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Hungary)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Andre Arnoldovich Lilienthal was born in Moscow to Hungarian parents. He was taken to Hungary at the age of two, but emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1935.

Awarded the GM title in 1950 he won the Moscow Championship 1939-40 and became (jointly with Igor Bondarevsky) USSR Champion in 1940 [rusbase-1] ahead of Vasily Smyslov, Paul Keres, Isaac Boleslavsky and Mikhail Botvinnik. He retired in 1976, returned to Hungary and remained well liked and respected.

He had the distinction of having met or played every World Chess Champion (with the exception of Steinitz) and was the world's oldest living grandmaster for quite some time.

Jan-04-04  PizzatheHut: Andre Lilienthal is the only man to have met or played every World Champion excluding Steinitz.
Jan-04-04  PinkPanther: How would he have played against Kasparov as the World Champion if he (according to the chessgames.com database) stopped playing in 1980?
Jan-04-04  PizzatheHut: <PinkPanther> Reread the previous post. It says MET or played.

Whoops, overlooked that, sorry.

Feb-09-04  Bitzovich: thank you
Mar-01-04  Shad0wl0rd16: Does anyone know if there is any relation between Andre Lilienthal and the famous aviator Otto Lilienthal?
Jun-26-04  SBC: is there some reason that Andor Lilienthal is referred to as "Andre" here?
Jun-26-04  Doctor Who: "Andre" is more common I think.
Jun-26-04  WMD: Andy to his friends.
Jun-26-04  SBC: .

If Andre is more common, why is it that, except for one instance, I've never seen him called anything besides his name, Andor, other than here?

One book, "Soviet School of Chess", by Kotov, I believe, referred to him as "Andrea" which seemed equally odd, so I took it to be an term of affection or familiarity.

.

Jun-26-04  Doctor Who: It's not uncommon. Look up "Andre Lilienthal" in Google http://www.google.com/search?q=%22A...

chessgames.com spells it the same way as chessbase.com, ruschess.com, newinchess.com, chessville.com, fide.com, the week in chess, etc. etc.

Jun-27-04  SBC: .

All I saw was 2 pages of what seems to be copies of a couple of the same articles on different sites which would lead me to believe it's lazy editing rather more than anything else.

.

Jul-05-04  vonKrolock: the french edition of Kotov's book brings "André" (evidently in the translations it was 'adapted') - i believe the russians prefers Andrei Arnoldovich, and the hungarians Andor

ah.. thank you.

I have a Russian friend, however, who wrote a beautiful article on Lilienthal - which can be found at http://www.chesscafe.com/text/skitt... - and in discussing Lilienthal with him, he always refered to him as Andor. I'm not a linguist. Maybe he prefers the original Hungarian.

Benzol: From the preface of 'Champions' Friend, Friendship's Champion : Lilienthal's hundred best games' "... - they all love Andor, Andre, Andrei, old Andor or Andre Arnoldovich."

Looks like it's a case of take your pick.

Jul-05-04  vonKrolock: <SBC> very kind, i read already that article (i'm an habitual costumer in chesscafe-lol)... <Benzol:...they all love...> maybe a recipe to reach long life even being a chessplayer...

Apr-16-05  Hesam7: Lilienthal learned chess at a very late age, he has been a close friend to Flohr and he was a taylor, he said in an interview that he was often compared to Keres not Paul but his father who was a taylor too!!! He had good relationships with Fischer, in their first meeting Fischer approaches him and says <e5xf6> the begining move of his combination in the famous game with Capablanca and so their friendship begins. He had good ties with Alekhine too, once Alekhine payed his entrance fee to a tournament and told him "give the money back when you are a master".
Apr-23-05  paladin at large: As recently as two years ago Lilienthal was still active and about, going as he did to attend a chess and cultural event at Lasker's country home of the 1920s not far from Berlin. The home is currently being restored as a cultural center.
Apr-23-05  vonKrolock: <he was a taylor> in hungarian, taylor is "szabó": Lilienthal was a szabó. His surname in German or Yiddish means "valley of the lilies"
Apr-29-05  Chris00nj: Could you have a game the 6 degrees of Andre Lilienthal (ala Kevin Bacon)?

You have to match Lilienthal to a particular player in 6 steps. For example: Capt Evans

Captain Evans vs MacDonnell, 1829
Blackburne vs MacDonnell, 1876
Capablanca vs Blackburne, 1914
Capablanca vs. Lilienthal

See, we only needed 4.
