Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-03-06  Karpova: 2 games, 19 moves, 2 wins - what a career bracket!
Jan-03-06  szunzein: This is 100% isn't it?
Jan-03-06  trumbull0042: This guy is just a wood-pusher though.
Jan-03-06  szunzein: maybe, but a very lucky one
Jan-03-06  Shams: Richard Wood was a USCF master, nothing more and nothing less. He was a staple at Oregon and Washington state tournaments, open and championship, for many years. He won his share. Sadly, he died young. A loss for chess in the Pacific Northwest.
Jan-03-06  szunzein: then it is a pity there are only two games of his here
Apr-14-21  kingfish24: Was a gentleman and glad to have meant and played a very!!! nice person a true Champion.
Jan-02-22  JimmyVermeer: The 2-move game was a joke. Darling was smarter than to fall for Fool's Mate.

perfidious: <FSR>, given their proclivities, maybe FIDE believe keeping a dead man in the lists enables them to suck more $$$ from somewhere.
Feb-19-23  stone free or die: <perf> more likely they just didn't hear via official channels yet.

I think the idea of retiring the FIDE id of a player was to allow federations to recycle numbers. I don't recall the details, but I know the FIDE id encodes the issuing federation's id into a player's id.

I think that means a federation might have a limited number of slots for players, and so the need to recycle.

But it's been awhile since I looked into this, but it did allow me to do a little fun study of migratory patterns of FIDE players in one of my blog posts.

FSR: I hear that FIDE removes the player, and recycles the number, immediately upon learning of his/her death. Believe it or not, they think that Kenneth Smith (famous for misplaying his eponymous gambit at San Antonio (1972)) is still with us. https://ratings.fide.com/profile/20...
