JAMES G. BLANCHARD.

Mr. James Gallier Blanchard, a well-known citizen, died yesterday at the Hotel Dieu shortly after 2 o'clock, in his 54th year. Mr. Blanchard has been in bad health for several years, and for some time past has been under treatment at the institution. But the best medical care and attention availed nothing for the hand of death had set its mark upon him, and yesterday he passed to his final reward.

Mr. Blanchard was the son of General Albert G. Blanchard, who was well known in American history. Like father like son. Young Blanchard, when scarcely 17 years of age went out in the war, and remained a faithful soldier all through the struggle. He was captured at Island No. 10, and remained a prisoner for some months.

Mr. Blanchard went out as an artilleryman. He took an active part in veteran affairs and was a member of the Army of Tennessee.

Mr. Blanchard, before retiring form active life on account of ill-health, was manager for the large firm of Morris McGraw, and prior to that time he was manager for several of the largest tobacco manufacturing concerns in the city.

Mr. Blanchard leaves a wife and son to mourn his death. The funeral will take place this evening from the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. M.F. Dunn, 4630 St. Charles avenue, the burial being at old St. Louis cemetery.

The deceased was a prominent member of the Chess Club, and had quite a reputation as a whist player.>

Nov-12-23  stone free or die: This is a pretty good identification of the player, nice job.

Somehow, despite a few hits on <James G. Blanchard> and <James Gallier Blanchard>, newspaper.com is missing the 1899-03-24 issue (OCR errors?)
