OLIVER BARBOSA
(born Sep-29-1986, 38 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

IM (2008); GM (2011).

Oliver Barbosa was born in Pasig City, Manila. He was the 1997 Shell Philippines National Youth Grand Finals Champion. In 2004 he reached the Philippines National semi-finals. The same year he was both the Philippines national under-18 Champion, and the Philippines National Junior Champion. In 2006, he came equal third behind Wesley So and Ronald Dableo at the 2nd Prospero Pichay Cup in Manila. Later that year he was a member of the successful Philippines team that defeated Myanmar in a team contest, his personal contribution being to score 8/12 to assist a clean sweep of all boards. Towards the end of 2010, he competed in the Penang Heritage City Open International Chess Tournament where he came equal first alongside Oliver Dimakiling with 7.5/9. He continued his good form immediately afterwards in the Asean Open Championships 2010 in Singapore, where he again came equal first, this time with Georgian GM Zurab Alekseyevich Azmaiparashvili, with a score of 6.5/9, drawing his individual game with the co-leader.

2011 started off with a successful result in the Moscow Open 2011 E, where he came equal second with 7.5/9, half a point behind the winner Vladimir Belous, losing only to Alexander Beliavsky, but defeating his other two GM opponents, namely Pavel Mikhailovich Kotsur from Kazakhstan and Russia's Sergey Volkov. In March he came =2nd at the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 1 behind Dzhurabek Khamrakulov and then came equal first in the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 2, also played in March. He scored 5/9 - and his first GM norm - at the 10th Asian Individual Championship (2011) in May, and in July he took outright first at the Campomanes Memorial Yangon International Open 2011 in Myanmar, with 7.5/9. Also in July he scored 8/13 to place =2nd with veteran GM Eugenio Torre, half a point behind prodigy GM Wesley So in the National Championships played in Manila, securing his second GM norm. His 3rd GM norm came at the Raja Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters in Kuala Lumpur in September. As his rating is already over 2500, his GM title was ratified by FIDE at its Congress in later October 2011.

2012 has seen him place a splendid 5th with 6/9 at the Asian Continental Chess Championship (2012), qualifying him for participation in the 2013 World Cup and win the Orissa GM Open held in Bhuvaneshwar in India with 8.5/10. He also played on board 2 for the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad (2012) held in Istanbul, scoring 7/10 with a TPR of 2668 and placed =1st at the Bangkok Chess Club Open 2013, scoring 7/9. He also placed 2nd at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship with 6.5/9. He won the 2013 Battle of Grandmasters with 10/13 and won the silver medal representing Tagatay on board 2 at the Asian Cities Championship 2013, helping his city team to the gold medal. In March 2014, he won the 19th International Grandmaster Open in Kolkata with 7.5/10 and in April was =1st alongside Francisco Vallejo Pons.

In the first round of the World Cup (2013), he lost in the first round to Le Quang Liem, the loss eliminating him from the contest.

Barbosa was a silver medalist of the 2005 SEA games. In 2003 he coached the Taytay team.

May-28-14  pinoymaster77: joeyj,

Do you have confirmation if GM Oli will proceed to play in this FIDE World Rapid & Blitz event ? In the light of recent events, may have to reconfirm.

Patapos na May, halos June na.

Jun-14-14  pinoymaster77: Wala na akong makitang PHI entry sa World Rapid & Blitz site, I guess that settles it. And also gives clue on what's possibly in store sa 'reply' sa PHI Olympiad seeding.
Jun-30-14  geniokov: Where is GM Oliver Barbosa? What is his where about in chessworld? Barbwire, will still consider yourself as a part of Philippine Team in Tromso,Olympiad?
Jul-08-14  pinoymaster77: Big decision until Thurs :

Sep-08-14  iking: alaws tao ditto
Sep-08-14  geniokov: < mysql: As I've said previously, I'm not too concerned about So. Whether he waits 2 years, 3 years, 20 years or whatever, he already has a good future ahead of him in Canada or in the US. What I'm more concerned of is what will happen to Barbosa and Paragua when they come back after their temporary visas expire? Will they end up like Joey Antonio?

Sep-08-14 Pulo y Gata: Ok letsgoto Oliver Barbosa's page. He posts answers there.>

Oliver says: "This Forum is under construction!" LOL!

Sep-08-14  geniokov: This is temporarily closed for renovation,"Watch out for falling debris!"
Sep-08-14  geniokov: <What I'm more concerned of is what will happen to Barbosa and Paragua when they come back after their temporary visas expire?> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsA...

This is what will happen to them when they report at the 1st day to Pichay´s office! LOL!

Sep-08-14  mysql: Hi Barbosa,

If you are reading, can you please give any update on your situation with Pichay? Is everything ok, or will you face sanctions when you come back?

Thanks.

Sep-08-14  geniokov: Pichay replied:"Hi mysql, Huwag mo munang abalahin si GM Barbossa at busy siya!"LOL!
Sep-08-14  wordfunph: <...or will you face sanctions when you come back?>

Penguincw: Congrats to Oliver Barbosa for remaining one of just 3 players still perfect at the Bangkok Chess Open through 4 rounds. In Round 5, he'll face top seed Wang Hao (3.5) with black.
Apr-15-15  pinoymaster77: BIG win over GM Nigel Short in rd4, before ramming into the Chinese wall in GM Wang Hao in rd5 today

Apr-16-15  zoren: <asianwarrior: What happened? So steep decline in his ELO rating>

I'm curious as well, he had a meteoric rise to 2600.

Good luck to him in Bangkok.

Penguincw: Oliver Barbosa ends up finishing 8th overall at the Bangkok Chess Club Open (2015), with a score of 6.5/9 (+5,-1,=3) and gained 11 points (2489 -> 2500).
Dec-31-15  gokusano: As early as October 19, 2011 Amulet speaks out his obscene mind (without factual basis) as if he is the manager of Oliver Barbosa. Why would he do this in the first place? Did he give a windfall to aid Barbosa's cause? All he can do is rah rah but not help in the real sense of the word help.

<Amulet: I would suggest to GM Oliver to not to kibitz here on his page. You know what happened in Wesley's page. They are just your fans. Do not interact with them. Before you know it, they will be asking too much of you, then if you won't be able to give in, they will post negative things on this page.

Remember they are just you patzer fans. Do not pay too much attention to them, just like almost all the GM's here.>

Feb-04-16  joeyj: Congratulations GM Oliver Barbosa !!!
