Mar-15-05 | | AdrianP: Anyone know whether these games belong two one or two players - i.e. is the American guy who played Fischer a few times and even beat him once, the same guy who seems to have made a reappearance in 2001 in England. |
|
Mar-15-05 | | WMD: I was sceptical but it's probably the same dude. Sherwin, a 2300 rated Yank, is still registered as a Bristol team player. http://www.4ncl.co.uk/0405_reg_bri.... |
|
Mar-15-05 | | RookFile: There was a brief time where Sherwin
was a stronger blitz player than Fischer, and gave a little blitz training to Bobby. He would count to 3 or something, and say "Move patzer!"
and Fischer would have to make his move. Later, my memory is Sherwin became a business executive. |

 | | paulalbert: The Jimmy Sherwin in England is the same player who was a long time leading master player in US. Jimmy was primarily a business executive, not a professional chess player. He was also President of the American Chess Foundation, now Chess-in-the Schools, which supported American chess. I served as a Trustee of the Foundation with Jimmy for many years. For some complex reasons, Jimmy later relocated to Europe and then retired from a successful business career in Europe. Paul Albert |

Mar-15-05 | | pazzed paun: was the "complex reason" having done jail time for securites fraud? One of those guys from the sixties worked for a big name corporation and got sent to prison for white collar crime. |

 | | Joshka: I recall with warm memories Jimmy and Edmar Mednis kibitzing over PBS coverage of the 1978 and 1981 Karpov- Korchnoi World Championship Matches hosted by Shelby Lyman. They were an entertaining trio, especially when Jimmy would make a sacastic comment to Shelby when the latter would place the pieces incorrectly while trying to reconstruct one of the many variations Edmar and Jimmy would propose. In fact it was probably due to their coverage of these matches that renewed my interest in chess. How sad that with the advent of cable, still nothing in all these years, for us chess fans via televison. |

 | | paulalbert: For passed paun: Jimmy Sherwin never served any time in prison. The case you might be thinking of was thrown out on appeal. "Complex reasons", was meant to include a variety of business and personal decisions and I don't know all the reasons he moved to Europe. As I said, his business career in Europe as far as I know was very successful. Paul Albert |
|
Mar-15-05 | | RookFile: Good for him. |

 | | Joshka: <wmd> Thanks for the info on Sherwin from the Sloan site! Was NOT aware of any of this. Too bad for Jimmy, wish him all the best, thought of him as a pretty good fellow. So you like that Sloan site hey?:-)...at times i have to avoid going there, cause I'll lose track of time and spend hours at a time there!;-)....think that's Sloan tickling those keys on that digital piano? |
|
Mar-16-05 | | pazzed paun: <WMD> thank you for the sloan site. Wow very complicated stuff-Sam Sloan a securities lawyer involved in the case-
It is a small world-Good Luck to Mr Sherwin. |

 | | chessgames.com: So what's the verdict: is this James Sherwin or a player with his namesake? |
|

 | | Benzol: From what's been posted previously I'm of the opinion that James T Sherwin and James Sherwin are the same player. However, my opinion doesn't make it a cast in stone fact. |

Jul-25-05 | | aw1988: You have a chess library any club would be proud of, so what are you waiting for? :) |

Oct-22-05 | | BobbyBishop: There's an amusing story told in Andrew Soltis' book Bobby Fischer Rediscovered. He was talking about a game he (Soltis) had played against Sherwin in which James T had finally gotten to employ a line in the Sicilian he'd been working on for several months. He claimed that he'd invested about 20 hours working out the kinks. Fischer all of a sudden appears and watches Sherwin's analysis. Here's how it appears in the book: When matters got interesting around move 17, Fischer stopped the show by asking "whadya got on this?" and moved a white piece. Sherwin had an answer but it was quickly demolished by a few quick Fischer follow-ups. This happened a move later in the game and then again. After the 4th time he'd refuted a Sherwin move, Fischer asked, "You spent 20 hours on this?" Classic Bobby... |

Jan-05-08 | | Harvestman: James Sherwin is currently playing in the South Wales Winter Congress, on top board, aged 74. I played him a few years ago in a local competition. He crushed me. |

Apr-16-14 | | Granny O Doul: Sherwin is the only player I ever played who referred to e1/e8 as "king's square" in a real-life, non-jocular way. |
|
Apr-16-14 | | RookFile: Right, that's old school, from the days of Franklin K. Young, etc. |
|
May-30-17 | | Nosnibor: According to the official tournament table of the 1951 U.S.Open Sherwin lost to Sandrin in the penultimate round but the db shows him winning this game. |

 | | Tabanus: -<Nosnibor> There were two Sandrin's playing, Angelo Sandrin and his brother Albert Sandrin, see http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |
