FSR: This game, and Lombardy's last-round win over Reshevsky, were instrumental in enabling Fischer to once again win the U.S. Championship by a point over Reshevsky.

Sherwin was dangerous playing the Saemisch against the King's Indian, scoring +7 =2 -2 with it, including some wins against world-class opposition. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... He beat Yanofsky with it, J Sherwin vs Yanofsky, 1956, beat Reshevsky in this game, and later in the year beat Gligoric with it in the Interzonal, J Sherwin vs Gligoric, 1958. Admittedly, Reshevsky nonetheless played the King's Indian against Sherwin in the following year's championship, and beat Sherwin's Saemisch in that game. J Sherwin vs Reshevsky, 1959.

  FSR: Reshevsky must have been horrified to realize that 19...Bxf5 loses to 20.Bxf5 Rxf5 21.Qc2! Qf7 (21...e4 22.Bxc5 dxc5 23.Rxe4 doesn't help) 22.g4!

FSR: Sherwin relates that in an elevator he overheard Reshevsky telling Evans that he was going to finish ahead of Evans because he had an easier field in the remaining games than Evans did. Evans responded that Sherwin might give him a difficult time, and might even beat him. Reshevsky responded, "Not in a million years." But Sherwin did in fact beat Reshevsky. Shortly thereafter, they were in the elevator together, and Sherwin told Reshevsky, "How time flies!" https://www.perpetualchesspod.com/n...

It seems that Sherwin must have misremembered this story in some way, since Evans didn't play in this tournament, and this was the only time Sherwin beat Reshevsky. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che...
