 | | offramp: A tedious and meaningless game with an unfunny, clichéd title. Zero stars. |

Apr-21-25 | | goodevans: I'm all for the idea of Fischer Random but it's surge in popularity has come too late for this old codger to get his head around it. Even the middle games often look completely alien. Not the case here. Things looked pretty normal after less than a dozen moves and so playing through it was a pleasure rather than a chore. My first question was 'why not the obvious 20...c4?'. click for larger viewI think with the game's <20...Rd7> Black was hoping White would 'fall into' <21.Qxd5+ Bf7>, trapping the Q. But in fact <22.Qxe5> would then have been fine for White and if Black takes <22...Rxe5?> then <23.Nxe5> would have him in heaps of trouble. There's plenty more in this game to pick over up until the almost in explicable <38...Ke6?>. With that, Black denied himself the chance to go after the weak b2 pawn and from then on White's win seemed just routine. Nice game. Not so sure about the pun. |

 | | Teyss: I'm part of the old guard who is not excited by freestyle, 960, Fischer or whatever you call it. I can barely understand standard chess, hence maybe in ten years when I can finally grasp the flow from opening to middlegame to endgame, I will consider looking at this variant. Time will tell if it's just a temporary fad or if it's the future of chess. Probably the latter but if the former, we'll soon introduce 10x8 boards, 8x10, fairy pieces and whatnots. I now finished playing the grumpy old man. Happy Easter everyone! 🥚🐇👯♀️ (Not sure about the last emoji, was looking for "bunny".) The pun: I'm with <offramp> 🥱 Okay, I'm prejudiced. The pun: had to think a bit to understand, so if it helps, it's a reference to Christopher Yoo hitting a woman after C Yoo vs Caruana, 2024 (BTW does anyone know about the legal affair after this?): he didn't play since then so he "hooks back" (?) with Grenke. Of course it's also a boxing term and a play: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_... |

 | | dheilke: <MissScarlett> ignore <offramp>, I like the game and the pun. Also, who gives a @#$% about @#$%ing Easter. Not everybody in the world worships your beardy old man. We have beardy old men of our own. History is replete with beardy old men dispensing advice and mostly dying of syphilis (in the East, anyway) - I suppose it's worth celebrating the ONE beardy old man who dispensed sagely advice and DIDN'T die of syphilis - by dispensing plastic symbols of fertility filled with candy?? You Westerners are weird... |

 | | FSR: I don't mind the non-mention of Easter and the Pope's death, but otherwise agree with <offramp>. I join <Check It Out> in marveling at the coincidence of another <MissScarlett> GOTD. |

 | | takebackok: Agree with <goodevans> why not 20...c4? alternatives are Rd7 as played and or Rc8 can't be right. Logical follow up 20...c4 21. Bxd8 Rxd8 22. Qc2 cxd3 23. Qxd3 dxe4 24. now what fxe4, Qd2 or Qd5+ looks ok playable for black. |
