Teyss: Now the Rooks are gone. The eval at 90 plies has jumped from +0.02 to +0.03. You really need to be Carlsen or Karpov to be able to win this. In their best days, with some help from their opponent.

LOL!

Teyss: Wait I get it, Ding doesn't have a killer TN for White but for Black in the next game. It's a sure win, only played once so hopefully Gukesh didn't see it before: Niemann vs Kramnik, 2023

Otherwise, I don't have an explanation.

Sally Simpson: Well done boys. Another rest day.
Dec-07-24  optimal play: Draw.

Very timid game.

Teyss: Just in time for apéritif and lunch, thanks lads. Not.
Dec-07-24  Cassandro: <Optie: But if Ding does come up with a killer TN in the KG, that would leave Gukesh and everyone flabbergasted! 😀>

I've got one: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.g4?!

Poor Gukesh won't know what hit him.

heh heh

So he’s got a TN for both white and black!

Anyway, I think this is their earliest finish so far.

Not too late tonight.

Good night.

FSR: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.b3!! was played thrice in the 1880s and 1890s: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che.... Be sure to read the late great <Phony Benoni>'s notes to Wiede vs A Goetz, 1880.

FSR: <Cassandro> A similar idea to yours, 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.g3!! was played in I Orchard vs J S R Thomson, 1881. Black was helpless against White's onslaught and was mated just 10 moves later.
Dec-07-24  Cassandro: <FSR> There you go!! See how strong it is? :)

And thanks for the <Phony B.> link. Hilarious read.

How would you feel about the two players having a daily play-off to resolve draws to a conclusive decision? Something like: they get a two hour break then have to play a 30-minute game, if drawn then another break and play a 10-minute game, if drawn another break and a 5-minute game, and if that one is also drawn, then a final Armageddon game to decide the point?

Why wait through a bunch a classical draws only to end up playing a speed match to end things? Why not move the "over time" rules from the end of the match to the end of each game?

Also, give them a portion of the prize fund after each win. So say a fixed match of 20 game days with 5% of the prize fund up for grabs each day. We get "blood" every game day and the match runs a full 20 game days as both players have a financial incentive to fight for each day's point.

(This is probably the fifth WC match where I have made this suggestion somewhere)

Dec-07-24  Messiah: Terrible game.

  Teyss: Hi jnpope,

Re your second point, it's partly addressed in this match: Ding - Gukesh World Championship Match (2024) (kibitz #390)

Re the first point, very interesting and innovative. Maybe too much for FIDE and organisers.

Dec-07-24  vonKrolock: a draw... (but, according to Ben Kingsley, white should win) *the islands

FSR: It doesn't get more exciting than this!
Dec-07-24  Cassandro: The problem is not the draws themselves. it's the content of the games. This game was a rather uninspiring draw, yes. But almost all of the other drawn games so far in this match have been really hard fought and interesting games to watch. I've never understood this almost pathological hate of draws that some folks here seem to harbor..
Dec-07-24  RookFile: Gukesh has shown that sometimes he'll take a risk to try to win a game. So I think Ding Liren thought he would do nothing, and Gukesh would overextend.

Needless to say, that didn't happen.

Dec-07-24  frankumber: In every way imaginable a Gen Z-ish match so far.

HeMateMe: Seems wrong to swap queens so early without a tangible advantage.
Dec-07-24  whiteshark: We have a real contender here for the title of 'most boring game of the match'.
Dec-08-24  whiteshark: <Sally Simpson: <Game 10 was an unofficial rest day.>>
Dec-08-24  Petrosianic: <whiteshark: We have a real contender here for the title of 'most boring game of the match'.>

I'm sure both players are more interested in your personal amusement than in winning the match.

Dec-08-24  whiteshark: <Petrosianic> Absolutely! ;)
