tamar: Caruana looked relieved to get the repetition, and played 38…Kg8 quickly, but 38…Qxf5 was winning and not all that risky as the long diagonal pressure after 39 exf5 Re8 40 Ng6 Bxf3 assures Black a material edge and a safer King.

  Teyss: <tamar> Good point. After 38...Qxf5 39.exf5 Re8 40.Re2 Nf4, or 39...Re7 40.Ng6 Re3 41.Nh4 Rce8 42.Rf2 Nf4, Black has a good game with R+B+P vs Q, the B pair and the long diagonal as you say (both approx. -2.5 at 31 ply).

But this imbalanced and dynamic position would have been to the taste of Carlsen (who can play anything), Ding (who is pragmatic) or Nepo (who would have played Qxf5 in less than a minute, figuring what to do afterwards), not so much Caruana. Too bad, would have been an even more interesting game from there on.

Let's see with the playoffs if Fabio will regret his cautiousness and his missed move in the previous game (probably also caused by prudence).

Aug-08-23  Cecco: I don't know if my former compatriot Fabiano considered, close to the time update, the queen sacrifice, which could have led to a masterpiece-game. Since his superiority as for rating, over Yilmaz (2782 to 2634 in the classic format), is even greater in the rapid play (2763 to 2542) and blitz (2813 to 2523), the choice not to risk looks sensible, which was confirmed by the result of 2-0 in the rapid games.
