beatgiant: Very instructive. White's mistake was 39. a3? needlessly expending one of his reserve pawn moves. Instead, <39. Kc4> Kd7 40. Kc5 Kc7 and only now 41. a3, having first advanced the king. In this case, White has the same number of reserve pawn moves as Black, so he will keep the opposition and win.

For example now 41...Kd7 42. b5 cxb5 43. Kxb5 Kc7 44. Kc5 Kd7 45. Kd5. Now after both sides run out of pawn moves, Black's king will have to give way.
