offramp: I have been apprised that this opening is E00, Catalan, Devin Gambit. Perhaps the gambit was invented by Bill Devin. Or by his opponent in H E Myers vs B Devin, 1973. Myers knows a lot about openings.

The game looked very lively,

...and then there was a shedload of exchanges and the game slid down to equality.

Jan-16-22  Andrew Chapman: Seen lots of videos just saying how shocking g4 is - implying it can just be taken - so disappointing that Esipensko didn't go for it - but I understand that he would be up against some preparation.

OBIT: Maybe it's a TN. Maybe Mamedyarov intended to play g3 but overshot the square.

An Englishman: Good Evening: One of the analysts on a YT channel found a game where an 1800 player tried it v. a 2350 player, who also replied 3...d5.

Perhaps Black didn't like the look of 3...Nxg4; 4.e4, but this allows the even sillier (if that's possible) 4...Nxf2; 5.Kxf2,Qh4+; 6.Ke3. Of course, Black probably loses the chess game, but at least he wins the Silly Game. And really, isn't that what *truly* matters?

Jan-20-22  Helloween: It looks like a correspondence game I tried which followed

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g4 Nxg4 4. e4 Qh4 5. Qe2 Bb4+ 6. Bd2 Bxd2+ 7. Nxd2 O-O 8. Ngf3 Qh6 9. O-O-O d6 10. h3 Nc6 11. Kb1 e5 12. d5 Ne7 13. c5 Ng6 14. Rc1 Nf6 15. Qe3 Qxe3 16. fxe3 Bd7 and Black consolidated.

Sally Simpson: It's an old idea in a new setting. (the delayed Grob - or Borg.)

The position after 1.d4 Nf6 2.g4 has been played over 100 times here.

fredthebear: <Sally>'s diagram above is the Gibbins-Weidenhagen Gambit (A45), a.k.a. Maltese Falcon Attack, but is often listed simply as an Indian Defense/Game.

The Maltese Falcon, you ask? "Don't get excited" - https://www.bing.com/videos/search?... O.K., so it was a little before my time, but we did have 3-5 channels of black and white television during my youth. Not one of them showed chess. At some point, we were blessed with Captain Kangaroo. Captain K gave rise to this all-time great song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6D... This sing along is the only time my mother ever let me smoke. Man, that was good stuff!! Hop in the shower and just trying hitting all those notes yourself.

Here's a miniature where Black accepts the gambit g-pawn: R Schnelli vs R Flugrat, 1989

But, if one doesn't want to study main line theory and endgames like a sophisticated intellectual, just play uncommon gambits like this (they're uncommon for a reason) just for the joy of playing: https://biggstikman.blogspot.com/20...

Now who would've guessed that this quickie would be resolved on the a-file? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah6...

It's Friday the 15th. Yes, I do believe I'll have to blitz this a try later tonight, after dark.

This one is for those w/sock puppet accounts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skb... Take it from a bear that knows, a cotton tail rabbit will kick the hsit out of it's adversary, and those claws are SHARP. There are some deep lovin' mommas in that video.

Sorry <offramp>. I don't know squat about the Devon Gambit. Looks like White might be a closet Grob's Opening player. If I'm Black, I'm taking the free pawn, else it becomes a thorn. And it's free, hors d'oeuvres! https://www.myrecipes.com/t/appetiz...

I think I'll give this opening a blitz spin or two on ICC, just have some chess fun, not too serious.
