FSR: 12...Nfe4! wins material. Presumably White saw 13.Qc2? Nxg3 and 13.Qc1 (actually best) Nb3. So he tried 13.Qb4? instead, but that was even worse.

fredthebear: Nicely done FSR! 13.Qb4? was my first inclination, too.

12.Be2 looks logical, natural but 12.b4 seems better. At that point, White isn't looking to make another pawn move.

FSR: <fredthebear> In the Nimzo-Indian White often expends several tempi to win the bishop pair, and sometimes gets in trouble as a result. Not so surprising when you reflect that Spielmann opined that a pawn is worth three tempi. The bishop pair is usually worth less than a pawn, especially in the short term, when the knights can hop around and cause a lot of damage to an opponent who is behind in development. See also, e.g., M Gerusel vs Lombardy, 1957.

fredthebear: Good explanation and example game <FSR>.

FSR: <fredthebear> Gorgeous! One of those games where you wonder, "How have I never seen this game?"
