FSR: 2...Ba6 is the Guatemala Defense. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owen%... From move 4 on, Black's play left something to be desired.
Jul-13-22  Cassandro: 3.c4 seems indeed to be the best way of meeting the Guatemalan Defense, avoiding the immediate exchange of light-squared bishops. This was also the move Reuben Fine preferred in a correspondence game against some Guatemalan players ca. 1950. That game is not in the CG-database, but I think that's the game that is the provenance of this opening's name.

fredthebear: Once again, FSR provides the CG.com database with a winning TN. Pawn structures affect piece movements, options. The uninformed will fail to see the value, hung up on the time control.

3.c4 prevents the exchange of light-squared bishops in the extremely rare Guatemala Defense. White gets a big center and an easy game. Instead 3.BxBa6 is typical. Something makes me think that Dr. Siegbert Tarrasch would have preferred 3.c4.

Bb7 aiming down the long diagonal instead of 2...Ba6 would have ruined White's good fortune with this structure.

Instead of taking the bait, retreating 9...Qh5 10.g4 Qf7 11.Ne5 Qe7 allows White to easily gain time and space on Her Majesty.

4...d5 seems to be Black's best try if at all: Zhu Chen vs Short, 2002
