An Englishman: Good Morning: Can we all pretend I didn't write that previous post? Thank you.
Jan-21-18  ChessHigherCat: Caruana's a real perfectionist, Mr. "See-a-good-move-look-for-a-better-one"
Jan-21-18  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Apparently, not all rook endings are drawn. Time for Hou to throw in the towel.

Jan-21-18  ChessHigherCat: Hey, she paid the tournament fee, she's going to sit in that chair until they come and chase her out!

Gypsy: Good morning <An Englishman>. No worries. :-)

Quite seriously, however: I very much enjoy your comments -- both for their technical content as for their gentle-but-dry-humor style!

AylerKupp: <<Gypsy> Is Hou using this as a learning opportunity?>

I think that she uses all these tournaments as a learning opportunity. She knows that she has no chance of winning but also knows that the only way that you can improve is to play against stronger players.

I personally applaud her for that. She could continue to play and clean up by playing in women's only tournaments but she knows that's not the way to improve her game. She would probably make more money doing that but prefers to make less money and get a chance to improve.

Jan-22-18  john barleycorn: I think she is serious in her approach to improve.

per aspera ad astra.

May the force be with her as I will not.

Jan-22-18  ChessHigherCat: <john barleycorn: per aspera ad astra.>

Through asparagus to the ashtray?

Jan-22-18  john barleycorn: < ChessHigherCat: ...

Pall Mall not asparagus.

Jan-22-18  JustAnotherMaster: damn hou dat that is not gonna win one game and end in last place, hou should never get an invite again! Unless to play other inferior players
Jan-23-18  technical draw: <Giving up a whole piece to a Grandmaster rated 2640, and STILL winning the game.>

Morphy did that a lot. (of course that was before there were any rating systems so we can't know the true strength of his opponents).

Sure we can, we have their games. They were a lot weaker than Gawain Jones.

I know you're just joking about ratings anyway.

Jan-23-18  technical draw: What would Morphy's rating be today?

Ans: Zero cause he's dead.

Jan-23-18  nok: <Zero cause he's dead.> He'd be an Alpha.

My comment was made while Hou played the sequence ... <56.Rb6 Rf4 57.Rc6...> Have a look at the position.

Jan-25-18  technical draw: <keypusher> <I know you're just joking about ratings anyway.>

True. But nobody should dare joke about MY rating!

Jan-26-18  CountryGirl: Hou is coming across as more Vera Menchik than Judit Polgar in this event - but hey, I totally admire her spirit and determination. This kind of experience will make the gap between her and other female players unbridgeable.
