Aug-17-21  Brenin: After 44 ... Ke2 White has mate in one (in three different ways), so unless Malakhov actually lost on time (do we know this?) the pun seems pointless, especially since it was White who had been dropping petrol bombs into Black's tank during the game

I have an idea. Why don't you spend 5 hours researching that and report back. If it wasn't a loss on time, spend 20 hours researching all of Malakhov's games to find one he did lose on time, and wasn't in a losing position anyway. Then you'll win the fantastic prize of seeing your name on the homepage-25 hours well spent, I'd say-and then everyone can criticize the pun anyway.

HeMateMe: Terrific pun (in my humble opinion). White resigned because he is mated in one move.

I might suggest that the pun works better if you find a game where V. Malakov attempts a sacrifice (a true 'Molotov Cocktail' [See: WWII jargon]) which fails, his opponent overcomes a piece sac and wins.

Aug-17-21  goodevans: Giving away the exchange with 29...Rg8 may have been unnecessary but, if so, it's not obvious. On the other hand, taking the Q out of the game with <30...Qa5?> goes against every instinct. What can she achieve from there?

After that, for example, <31.Nxg8 Rxg8 32.h6 g6> might look safe enough...

... but White can just break open the position with <33.Rgxd4> taking advantage of Black's offside Q (33...Nxd4? 34.Qg5).

Black may have been under time pressure but doesn't instinct tell you to play 30...Qc5?

Teyss: <Brenin> Also failed to see the link with the clock. Maybe "Malakhov Cock Fail" would have... no, forget it.

<HMM: I might suggest that the pun works better if you find a game where V. Malakov attempts a sacrifice (a true 'Molotov Cocktail' [See: WWII jargon]) which fails, his opponent overcomes a piece sac and wins.> Yes, and if the game is long there could be "Malakhov Mock Tail".

Oh, almost forgot, the game. Good King hunt.

Teyss: <goodevans> Interesting. Maybe Black thought he had counterattacking chances on the Qside starting with Qxa2 which he did on move 40 when the game was utterly lost.

Earlier he might have tried 28.h6 to block the hP or the protective 28.Rg8.

Aug-17-21  faulty: One of the worst titles for the game of the day. MaLAkhov and MOlotov are stressed in different positions. The reason for selecting this particular game is not clear at all. Or else someone should explain to me.

Yeah.

Aug-18-21  tonsillolith: Factoid regarding the word cocktail: in German the word Schwanz for "tail" is used as slang for "cock".
