Jul-25-23  Brenin: ... which may or may not have been killed by Schrödinger's cat?
Jul-25-23  nalinw: Good pun .....
Jul-25-23  actinia: I used to play Pirc/modern and games like this hurt! These occasional beautiful attacking games by white are ultimately unavoidable and why I had to give it up.
Jul-25-23  Granny O Doul: Way down upon the Schwaninger.
Jul-25-23  goodevans: Unlike Schrödinger's cat there's never any doubt about the fate of Schwaninger's rat.

Love the pun. Best in a while.

OhioChessFan: I like the pun more than I should. I'm sure there's worse openings than the Pirc, but I haven't yet seen one.

Teyss: Don't understand why it's categorised as Rat since it's a Pirc. AFAIK the rat defence is 1.d4 d6 2.c4 e5 and I don't see a possible transposition.

That said, it could be both. But not a Catalan.

  Honza Cervenka: White could play also 10.Nd6+! exd6 11.Re1+ with overwhelming attack. Of course, 11...Be6 12.c4 Qf5 13.Bd3 Qf6 14.Bg5 is not an option, as well as 11...Kf8 12.Bc4 Qxc4 13.Bxd6+ Kg8 14.Re8+ +-. After 11...Kd8 12.c4 Qf5 13.Bxd6 b6 14.Bd3 Qd7 15.Qf4 Na6 16.Bxg6! black cannot take 16...fxg6 for 17.Qg5+ with mate.
Mar-16-24  mel gibson: I thought of 14. Bxe6 or 14. Rxe6+.

Stockfish 16 chooses a different ply:

14. Bb3

(14. Bb3 (1.Bb3 Kf8 2.Ng5 Nf6 3.d5 cxd5 4.Nxd5 Qxd2 5.Bd6+ Kg8 6.Ne7+ Kf8 7.Rxd2 Bd7 8.Nxg6+ Ke8 9.Nxh8 Bxh8 10.Be5 a5 11.a4 Bg7 12.c3 Ke7 13.g3 Ne8 14.Bf4 Nf6 ) +5.49/41 156)

score for White +5.49 depth 41.

If I force SF to play the game ply it's slightly better:

14. Bxe6 fxe6

(14. .. fxe6 (1. ... fxe6 2.Rxe6+ Kf8 3.Rde1 Nf6 4.Rxf6+ Bxf6 5.Bxh6+ Kg8 6.Re8+ Kf7 7.Ne4 Rxe8 8.Nd6+ Ke6 9.Qxa5 Kxd6 10.Qc5+ Kd7 11.Ne5+ Kc7 12.Bf4 Bxe5 13.Bxe5+ Rxe5 14.Qxe5+ Kb6 ) -5.78/42 209)

score for Black -5.78 depth 42.

If I try the other ply it still wins:

14. Rxe6+

(14. Rxe6+ fxe6 (1. ... fxe6 2.Bxe6 Nf7 3.Qd3 Nf6 4.Bxf7+ Kxf7 5.Ng5+ Kg8 6.Qxg6 Rh6 7.Qf7+ Kh8 8.Nf3 Qd8 9.Ne5 Ng8 10.g4 Qf6 11.g5 Qxf7 12.Nxf7+ Kh7 13.gxh6 Nxh6 14.Ng5+ Kg8 ) -3.95/42 231)

score for Black -3.95 depth 42.

  Sally Simpson: White to play.

White has the ideal Reinfeld strive for set up. Practically any aggressive move will win. The only danger being, and Tarrasch once lost a game offering this explanation, White has so many good moves you can astray deciding on what one to choose. (he then botched it and lost.)

It is the kind of position as White you do not want to ruin by making a move. Those 7 pawns on light squares and the harmony of White's set up is too picturesque to be marred by a butchers crude Bxe6.

I'd wandering around the tournament hall for 20 minutes so all my fellow competitors could admire the position. When I came back to the board and if my opponent had not resigned, I'd play anything but 14.Bxe6. These once in a lifetime positions should be cherished. 14.Nd5.

Mar-18-24  thegoodanarchist: I see this was GOTD on July 25th, 2023. Ah, yes, I remember it as if it were 8 months ago...

The Bong Cloud Opening is worse.
