FSR: Note that not only White's minor pieces are symmetrically placed, but so are Black's knights, bishops, and rooks - even more so than in the granddaddy of this sort of thing, Dodge vs J R Houghteling, 1904. Beautiful!
Dec-11-24  goodevans: 17.Nxf7(?) set up an exquisite final position but Black could and should have spoiled the fun with 17...Bxd6 with which White’s huge plus would have evaporated.

17.Bxf8+ was the right way to have kept it but then there’d have been nothing remarkable about this game and we all would never have seen it. Hmmm.

Dec-11-24  DaeWang: <goodevans> you're correct, and 17. .. Bxd6 is so obvious. And with a nod to <FSR>, maybe black saw the mate and decided to allow it.
Dec-11-24  catlover: What a memorable final position!

I'd rather enjoy games like this than be world champ - and lucky me, I've gotten my wish.

  OhioChessFan: Love the final position.
Dec-11-24  stone free or die: Just stopping in, inspired by <OCF>'s post to have a look.

<Fearful Symmetry> is a great pun, inspired by William Blake I'm sure.

Dec-11-24  mrknightly: Am I the only one a bit suspicious about this game? If Herr Wahlund is online, perhaps he can vouch for the game's authenticity. Otherwise , consider the following: Wahlund has 21 games listed, all dating from 2016-2019. This game is dated 2007. Wahlund has 5 wins in 21 games, all from 3 tournaments, except this game, no other NN games, only one other French defense, and none of his wins are as "spectacular" as this one. To have the white pieces symmetrical, perhaps. To have the Black pieces symmetrical, perhaps. To have not only both White and Black pieces symmetrical, but to have this occur at the same time on the last move?? "Healthy skepticism is the basis of all accurate observation." A. Conan Doyle

Teyss: Hi stone free or die,
Thanks for the hint, didn't know the reference. (For ignorants like me, it's a line of the poem 'The Tyger'.) Another pun could have been for instance "NbbN".

Hi mrknightly,
I was wondering the same, it could be constructed, making a close replica of the game provided by <FSR> colours inverted. But if it is:
- Why make NN win when we know he always loses? Max Wahlund could have taken the full benefit of the beauty AND the score.
- Why not make the final position completely symmetrical, moving the BPs on the a and h files as well as the WRs? For instance:

Maybe precisely to make it less obvious? Anyhow an awesome final position, constructed or not.

Dec-12-24  stone free or die: <Teyss> - William Blake wasn't just a poet of words, he also illustrated his own writings. I hope you read the illustrated version of his work.

In case you didn't, here's a version:
