Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-05-23  Brenin: <goodevans>: Ah, a classic from the 1980s!
Mar-05-23  goodevans: <Brenin> Yes, indeed but I deleted my original post because I wanted to distance myself from this dire warbling.

There are things from the 80s we want to forget because they're morally iffy, or worse, but there are also things we want to forget just because they're so embarrassingly awful:

Korora: White faces a dolorous choice between checkmate on g1 or g2.
Mar-05-23  Amarande: Anyone else notice Stockfish blasting 2 c4 here and recommending 2 ... d4 for Black?

I guess it must be channeling the soul of Tarrasch ...

FSR: <Amarande> Absolutely right. 2...d4! immediately equalizes, and gives Black a slight plus score (50.6% for Black on ChessBase Online, and 52.5% in Opening Explorer). Accordingly, White rarely allows it these days. Other moves are playable (2...c6, 2...e6, 2...dxc4), but are theoretically inferior and score significantly worse (ChessBase Online shows that the best-scoring, 2...e6, scores 43.2% for Black). Why not grab instant equality?

  offramp: Very good pun.

Chas & Dave were session musicians. They provided the hook from a Labi Siffrey song. That was used in the famous song by Eminem; the song that goes Who Am I etc.

Honza Cervenka: Instead of 26...Rg8 black could have played 26...Ne3! winning instantly. White's position was worse anyway but 28.Qf4 was a blunder. After 28.Rg1 the game could continue with 28...Qc1! 29.Bh4 Qxg1+! 30.Kxg1 Nxe5+ 31.Qg2 Rxg2+ 32.Kxg2 Nc4 with extra Pawn and clearly better ending.

Teyss: <goodevans: (...) there are also things we want to forget just because they're so embarrassingly awful> You're forgetting all the great stuff from the 1980s: baggy pants, cars that looked like soapboxes, the Walkman, the Bee Gees.

<Korora: White faces a dolorous choice between checkmate on g1 or g2.> ?

MissScarlett: White went in off the black, so Winter should have scored 7 points, thereby sharing equal first with Euwe.

MissScarlett: <Teyss> will claim the pun would have been better - even better - if the players were named Charles and David.

You got more rabbit than Sainsbury's, why don't you give it a rest?

Mar-05-23  whiteshark: Well, <Winter is coming> fits here, too.

Teyss: <MissScarlett> Oh no, I wouldn't dare try improving one of your puns. Let's just say it would have been <good> if indeed the players had been named Charles and David, or if it had been played in 1986, or if some pieces had been bouncing on the edges of the board like snooker balls.

<MissScarlett: White went in off the black, so Winter should have scored 7 points, thereby sharing equal first with Euwe.> You're not very considerate to <OhioChessFan> for posting this without explanation.

Teyss: <Honza Cervenka> Thanks for elevating the level of the discussion.
Indeed 26...Ne3! wins: 27.Rg1 (else Qg2# or Nxf1) Qf4 28.h3 (else 28...Nf2+ 29.Bxf2 Qe4+ 30.Rg2 Qxg2#) Rg8 (only now) and White has to give up material to avoid 29...Rxg1+ 30.Kxg1 Qf1+ 31.Kh2 Qg2# (29.Rxg8+ Kxg8 doesn't help).

Mar-05-23  Brenin: Black's final mating attack along the g-file resembles a long pot into the corner pocket, but with reversed colours. Snooker fans will know what I mean.

  Korora: <Teyss> It depends on whether the ♗ or the ♖ captures the ♘. 29.♗xf2 ♕g2# or 29.♖xf2 ♕g1#.
