Oct-30-12  ajile: < Tabanus: <kb2ct> Ok.

Sorry for being slow, but is it 20.Ne3 Rac8 21.Bd2 Kh8 22.gxf5 that leads to the fortress?>

We can't give him time to reorganize his pieces behind his wall of pawns.

The key breaks, depending on the variation, are gxf5 or ..fxg4 if we can force it and b3-c4. Breaking down the wall allows us to attack his cramped position. Also in many lines when he retakes ..exf5 we then get a protected passed pawn on e5. Possible exchanges on d5 can also leave him with a weakened d5 pawn.

On principle I like ..Rac8 next for Black.

IMO we need to be very careful and we have a win in hand before we commit to playing b4 since this locks the q-side.

If we can't win this I'll eat my mouse. Or is it 26...a6?

Oct-30-12  stunningmove: <ajile> yes I also like Rac8 for him and like a6 as well. a6 has the added advantage of preventing our a6 as well as protecting b4. Plus Rybka4.1 has a6 as the second highest rated move behind fxg4 which I think he is avoiding. I look for either. They tend to transpose.
Oct-30-12  Lambda: Example of a successful c4 push. Mostly fairly low-ply engine moves, so there will be plenty wrong with it, but I haven't seen c4 fail to work yet:

Pressure on the f-pawn combined with being able to exchange rooks off due to an open c-file seems to have been the key.

<Ceri:>

The question is if he plays Rac8, do we have to play gxf5 or can we just increase the pressure for him to play fxg4???

:0)

Oct-30-12  DcGentle: Most likely the further course of the whole game depends on the right time when we will play gxf5. Because we can assume, that Black won't play fxg4. (This would be too good for us.)

Oct-30-12  DcGentle: <kb2ct>: Current findings prefer 21. Bd2, as the original plan was prescribing already.

We can probably delay gxf5 up until the point where he is about to play ..g6. The positions where he is forced to retake with his e pawn are probably better for us since they give us a protected advanced passed pawn.

If we let him play ..g6 to reinforce the f5 pawn then he can retake ..gxf5 bringing another pawn towards his centralized pawn mass.

This is a general positional principle of course and there might be specific lines where we would benefit from the completely open g file.

  Tabanus: <stunningmove> In that line, if 27...Nf8 then 28.Bxf5! 1-0 or 26...Nf8 27.Bxf5! also 1-0

Stunning, isn't it :)

Oct-30-12  kwid: Oct-30-12 < DanLanglois:> <There is a chance for us> But somewhat unrealistic to assume when facing such a formidable opponent. He certainly is not expected to play as demonstrated in my sample of how to lose for black.
Oct-30-12  truefriends: Anyone expecting a move tomorrow?!

And if so... which move?!

Im just curious... ;-)

Oct-30-12  DPLeo: I'll go out on a limb and predict 20... Rac8 tomorrow.
Oct-30-12  benjinathan: <kwid> you missed Dan's irony.
Oct-30-12  stunningmove: <Tabanus> LOL yes it is a stunning move! Nice word play. Of course his machine (and skill) won't let him fall into that trap BUT it should allow us to leverage our position. Let's keep working on black improvements since the moves up to that point are somewhat likely.
Oct-30-12  DcGentle: This is the current position:

click for larger view

If Black doesn't take pawn g4, then one current threat of 20. Ne3 looks like this (meaning we could move again):

21. Bd2 Kh8 22. Rg2 Bh7 23. gxf5 exf5 24. Rag1 g6 25. b3 Rac8 26. c4 Rfd8

click for larger view

Interestingly, if Black answers 20... Rae8, the game could look like this:

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Nf3 e6 5. Be2 Nd7 6. O-O Bg6 7. a4 Ne7 8. a5 Nf5 9. c3 h6 10. Nbd2 Be7 11. g4 Nh4 12. Nxh4 Bxh4 13. f4 f5 14. Bd3 O-O 15. Kh1 Qe8 16. Qc2 Kh7 17. Rg1 Be7 18. Nf1 Qf7 19. h3 b5 20. Ne3 Rae8 21. Bd2 Kh8 22. Rg2 Bh7 23. gxf5 exf5 24. Rag1 g6 25. b3 Rc8 26. c4 Rfd8

click for larger view

What do we notice? We have reached the same position as if Black had not moved the next time around. In my eyes this means, that 20... Rae8 is not a good move.

Oct-30-12  MikeB20: If/when black plays c5 it leaves the black Q-pawn up for grabs after we play gxf5, exchange bishops on f5 and then play Qg2, hitting d5 with the Q and N. The Q pawn cannot be defended in many variations; the black knight is in the way.

Tabanus: <kb2ct: <Tabanus:> I don't think he will play Qg6 unless he has worked out the knight sac. The threat of Pg5 after Rg2 is just too strong.

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Nf3 e6 5. Be2 Nd7 6. O-O Ne7 7. a4 Bg6 8. a5 Nf5 9. c3 h6 10. Nbd2 Be7 11. g4 Nh4 12. Nxh4 Bxh4 13. f4 f5 14. Bd3 O-O 15. Kh1 Qe8 16. Qc2 Qf7 17. Rg1 Kh7 18. Nf1 Be7 19. h3 b5 0 20. Ne3 fxg4 21. hxg4 Bxd3 22. Qxd3+ Qg6 23. f5 exf5 24. Nxf5 Bg5 25. Rg2 Bxc1 26. Rxc1 Rae8 27. Rf1 Nxe5 28. dxe5 Rxe5>

+1.75/25 29.Rgf2, no way he can survive.

Oct-30-12  DcGentle: <truefriends>: 20... Rac8 or 20... a6 are candidates. The latter would reveal his intention to set up a blockade position.
Oct-30-12  kwid: Oct-30-12
<benjinathan: <kwid> you missed Dan's irony.>

no; i seem to get to know him better and better. i bet he is waiting for a timely insertion and this was an invite. but for now i'm off to bowling again.

Oct-30-12  benjinathan: <kwid> Many strikes! Or perhaps: "No potato bowls" is more appropriate?!
Oct-30-12  kb2ct:

<Tabanus:>

I know the team hates it when I don't post computer lines, but I think that if he plays Kh8 in any Ne3 line that he is cooked.

That was the point of my blockade versus zugswang post this morning. I know that Rybka at high ply always plays Kh8, but I wanted to see if I could force it.

One more line to work out.
