fredthebear: William Aramil wrote "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess Openings" in 2008. As with many books, the cover/title can be deceiving. The book is nowhere near "complete" when it comes to chess openings. In fact, it omits the Sicilian Wing Gambit (B20) as defended by the author in the game above! A better name would be "An Introduction to Some Common Chess Openings." For example, the King's Gambit (C30-39) was left out, to the author's preference of 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 openings.

What information that is in Aramil's guide is accurate, worthwhile to know. It's comparable to "Winning Chess Openings" by Yasser Seirawan, and the older "How to Win in the Chess Openings" by I.A. Horowitz. Aramil's guide can be recommended to advanced beginners and intermediates.

Aramil's guide has 187 pages w/a handy index, but contains NO theoretical columns. (Wikipedia is more theoretical in most cases, and Everyman's "Starting Out" series is far more extensive.) Thus, Aramil's guide is not comprehensive whatsoever, but broad enough to be useful for the aspiring student. The basics of common openings are explained up through 9-13 moves with 1-2 diagrams per page; very readable. Opening branches and variations are sorely lacking.

My copy was purchased "like new" at Half Price Books some years ago for $6.48, a fair price. Most members of this website will not need Aramil's guide, but an aspiring student of the game who wants to become more than a woodpusher can make good use of it.

As far as I understand the Complete Idiot book series, "Complete" modifies "Idiot," not "Guide."

fredthebear: That makes sense. Glad I justified my discount purchase. (I have hundreds of chess books at all levels.) Otherwise, the modification as you say <keypusher> would seem to indicate that buyers...are self-admitted idiots!

BTW, the general introductory chess book "The Complete Idiots Guide to Chess, Third Edition" by Patrick Wolff is much heftier than Aramil's guide, with even more diagrams. Wolff's book was re-issued in 2019 under a different title: "Learn to Play Chess Like a Boss" by Patrick Wolff. Same book (as far as I can tell), different title and color. The latter title is far more appealing, don't you think?

Depends on your boss.
