 | | al wazir: Black can recover his piece by playing 19...Qa3, threatening the ♗ on e3 while giving his ♔ an escape square. But I wouldn't give odds on the ♔'s long survival: 20. Bf1 dxe4 21. Bc4+
Kf8 22. Qh8+ Ke7 23. Rxe4+ Kd6, etc. |
|
Oct-18-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: 19 ... Qa3 allows mate-in-7. |
|
Oct-18-22 | | goodevans: All those years I played 2...Nc6 in the Sicilian. If only I had Stockfish back then to tell me I should have been playing 2...d6 instead, as the annotations so helpfully point out here. Quick, somebody tell Carlsen. He plays 2...Nc6 all the time. |
|

 | | perfidious: <goodevans>, somehow I managed to be a life 1200 player despite never once essaying 2....Nc6, generally preferring 2....d6 as well; for something truly inexplicable, <FSR> has managed to become quite a competent player despite his predilection for that tenth-rate move. |
|
Oct-18-22 | | Brenin: For those unfamiliar with US TV culture, The Larry Sanders Show was a very popular 1990s sitcom, starring comedian and chat-show host Garry Shandling as a parodic version of himself. |

 | | MissScarlett: Was it <very popular>? My vague impression is that it was cleverer than it was funny. That's satire for you. |
|
Oct-18-22 | | Brenin: <MissScarlett>: Well, it ran for six seasons, and won its bodyweight in awards, but my recollection is that it was rarely laugh-out-loud funny. |

 | | FSR: <perfidious> As you know, I am a devotee of the Classical Sicilian, which one can reach via either 2...Nc6 or 2...d6. I have played both, but in recent years I have preferred the latter, since I'd rather see 2...d6 3.Bb5+ than 2...Nc6 3.Bb5. TBH, I'd rather not see either. 3.Bb5+ isn't terrifying, but it's hard to beat. |

Nov-05-24 | | Mayankk: White is up a piece but down 3 pawns. Winning a few pawns should win. This can be accomplished by the mating threat of 19 Nxe4 dxe4 20 Bc4+ when Queen is lost to stave off mate. Anything else will just delay defeat due to the threat of 20 Nf6+. For example 19 ... Bf5 20 Nf6+ Kf7 21 Ng5+ Kg7 22 Nd7+ and now Queen is again lost. |
|
Nov-05-24 | | TheaN: White's up a piece for three pawns and just got forked on e4... seems like a dire situation, were it not for the fact that the defender of the pinning piece can't actually move: <19.Nxe4 +-> wins at least two pawns back and saves the piece. Issue is 19....dxe4 20.Bc4+ costing Black the entire house and 20.Nf6+ is threatened. I considered a few defensive ideas: 19....d4 20.Bc4+ Kh8 21.Nxd4 +- and the knight on e4 prevents Qc5. 19....Bf5 20.Nf6+ Kh8 21.Bxf5 is technically best, but now Black has to pull all stops to prevent a mate anyway as 21....gxf5 22.Re6! +- threatens mate all around. I think for this Tuesday solve seeing the defenselessness of e4 is key, the rest will come naturally. |

 | | takebackok: Easy Tuesday, 19. Nxe4 dxe4 is lights out after 20. Bc4+ however, even 19...Bf5 20. Nf6+ Kg7 21. Nd7+ Or 20...Kh8 21. Bxf5 gxf5 22. Ng5 it's gg. |
|
Nov-05-24 | | geeker: Interesting that 19. Rxe4, which I thought would be equivalent, doesn't work!
HeHateMe (2022) beat me to the Larry Storch F Troop punch. I didn't care for that show and almost never watched it. |
|
Nov-05-24 | | mel gibson: Easy today but Stockfish 17 fights harder -
it declines the Knight:
19. Nxe4
(19. Nxe4 (1.Nxe4 Bf5 2.Nf6+ Kh8 3.Bxf5 gxf5 4.Nxd5+ Qg7 5.Qc1 Nd4 6.Ne5 Ne6
7.Nf4 Nxf4 8.Qxf4 Rg8 9.Re2 Qf6 10.h3 h6 11.Kh2 a5 12.Rd2 Kh7 13.Nf3 Re8
14.Rd6 Re6 ) +5.78/41 389)
score for White +5.78 depth 41.
If I force SF17 to accept the Knight it's mate in 11: 19. .. dxe4
20. Bc4+ (20. Bc4+ (1.Bc4+ Be6 2.Bxe6+ Qf7 3.Bxf7+ Kxf7 4.Ng5+ Ke7 5.Qg7+ Kd6 6.Rd1+ Kc5 7.Ne6+ Kc4 8.Qb2
Nb4 9.Rd4+ Kb5 10.Qxb4+ Ka6 11.Nc7+) +M11/63 14) |

Nov-05-24 | | stacase: 19.Nxe4 or 19.Rxe4 ?? Common sense says Knights are cannon fodder, not Rooks. So 20.Bc4+ and Black throws in the towel. So there no need to worry about winning the won game. Let's see what tomorrow brings (-: |
|
Nov-05-24 | | saturn2: 19.Nxe4 and the knight cannot be taken. 18...e4 was a pseudoskewer |

Nov-05-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: The tactic is immediate: 19. Nxe4 dxe4?? 20. Bc4+ and B lose the ♕. Therefore, B cannot capture. If B try to escape from a discovered check with 19... Qf7?! 20. Nf6+ Kf8 21. Ng5 and B has noway to deal with the two threats: the ♕ and the possible Re8#. Maybe, the less worst move for B is: 19... d4 20. Bc4+ Kh8 21. Nxd4 Qg7 22. Nxc6 Qxa1 23. Rxa1 bxc6 24. Nd6 with an extra piece by 1 ♙. |
