  GrahamClayton: <wordfunph>29...♖f3!

White is close to zugzwang, as any move by a piece loses, eg 30. ♖e1 ♖xf2, or 30. ♕xf3 ♕h2#. He is forced to play 30.c4, but resigned after 30...♔h6, as 31. b4 cxb4 leads to the queening of the b-pawn.

May-23-14  estrick: It's impressive to see White's pieces all driven back to squares surrounding the king, beginning with 27. ...Rf8.

White will indeed be in zugzwang once he runs out of pawn moves.

This position is #154 in Alburt's 'Chess Training Pocket Book'.

Phony Benoni: Can't help but be reminded of the infamous "Tomb Game", B Harper vs R Zuk, 1971. It all seems so harmless until Black's king starts moving aimlessly and White realizes he doesn't have a good reply -- or any reply at all.
Sep-02-15  Viennablue: Wouldn't 28...Rf4 have been stronger?
Sep-02-15  Ferro: Haz Pilates
Sep-02-15  Ferro: My uncle Pepe: 15. Bah! (the key)
Sep-02-15  kevin86: This looks like a more "open" version of the tomb game.
Sep-02-15  kamagong24: reminds me of the immortal ZUGZWANG game between Saemisch and Nimzowitsch Copenhagen (1923)
Sep-02-15  mruknowwho: Was White's game plan to control the light squares? That seems like the only thing that makes 11. Be2 and 12. a4 make sense. I would have played 11. O-O-O.

Comments like this should be taken out and shot. Both moves win and yes, the engine gives a higher score to 28....Qg5+ (29.Bg2 Nf3+ wins the queen). But if Dvoretsky had played it the game would have been forgotten the next day. Instead it will be remembered forever.
