Jan-18-10  GreenFacedPatzer: <kingsindian2006> No. Rating changes don't take into account which color you played. Averaged over many games, you'll play (very nearly) as many games as white as you will as black, so a color dependency is unnecessary to the rating system.
Jan-18-10  beenthere240: This is like a Pelikan.
Jan-18-10  kingsindian2006: thanks , never knew that greenpatzer
Jan-18-10  Marmot PFL: <This is my time to shine,” boasted the American after the well-deserved win. “If I continue to play like I did so far, I can beat anyone in this tournament.>

I guess he wants to be the player people love to hate. Wouldn't mind seeing Anand teach him something tomorrow.

Jan-18-10  dagwood2005: I think the ...a6 is early enough for it to be considered a kind of Najdorf. But admittedly, I'm no expert...
Jan-18-10  BTO7: These two players have not been quite in the past and Nigel the one trying insinuate Naka was all hype ...should walk across the floor and shake Naka's hand and give him is due. Naka simply crushed him ...he tried to get tactical with Naka and caught his lunch :) The talk ended today and walking the walk took place and it was clearly Naka! Entertaing game tho !! Great game you two
Jan-18-10  Riverbeast: <I guess he wants to be the player people love to hate>

"It's the man you love to hate.....

Coming out of New York State!"

Jan-18-10  Paraconti: well you can't play an old line in a new age. This isn't Portisch either!
Jan-18-10  CruyffTurn: <dagwood2005: I think the ...a6 is early enough for it to be considered a kind of Najdorf.> Nope, it's what's called a Boleslavsky set-up with the 5...Nc6 and 6...e5, or commonly referred to as a Classical Sicilian nowadays.
Jan-18-10  CruyffTurn: <dagwood2005> I ought to point out too that this was all the rage in the 50s and 60s, Boleslavsky, Spassky, Botvinnik all played this way. Some Argentinian players, most notably Miguel Najdorf had the idea of playing 5...a6 (in order to play 6...e5 without allowing Bb5+) before developing the knight. This was adopted by Fischer, and it was he more than anyone else who was responsible for it becoming 'mainstream', and the Najdorf Sicilian becoming Black's most popular choice.

icc game of the day...svidlers annotation

Jan-18-10  timhortons: as nigel said in his page, naka will always be a dangerous opponent to everyone in any tournament.
Jan-18-10  parisattack: Wow! I haven't seen the pure Boleslavsky for quite awhile at the top end of the ladder!
Jan-19-10  Ulhumbrus: An alternative to 20 Nd2 is 20 Nd4. Then one threat is Bg4 followed by Nf5.

Well, this isn't going to make it popular (since it's White who "allows" the Boleslavsky). I remember an old MCO I used to have said 6.Be2 was a useless move because White just didn't have any promising plans after 6...e5.

An Englishman: Good Evening: This game reminds me a lot of a masterpiece from the early days of the Boleslavsky Variation, Unzicker vs Taimanov, 1952. In both games, White plays 6.Be2, 7.Nf3, fianchettoes the dark squared Bishop--and ends up with little to do.
Jun-20-24  goodevans: <"Shortcut"> - A clever twist on the usual Nigel Short pun. <"by Village Genius"> - I've absolutely no idea.

offramp: <Akatombo> stopped posting here 10 years ago. She had a serious case of punorrhoea. Many of her pun attempts were just brief word salads. Like those stupid posts from a nutcase who posts big paragraphs of drivel. Whatsisname...the guy who is on EVERYONE'S block list.

Anyway, she hasn't posted in ten years - but she is still a premium member. What's the game?!

offramp: A believe that today's pun is three titles from Kafka's short stories: “A Country Doctor”, "The Village Schoolmaster" and "The Next Village", all sellotaped together. Very clever!

Sally Simpson: The pun. Nakamura in Japanese means 'Middle Village.' so mixed with SHORTcut I think perhaps that is where it comes from.
Jun-20-24  goodevans: <Sally Simpson> I wish I'd thought of that!
