Sep-02-09  beenthere240: 23. Rxe6 is a cute shot. What I liked more is how Short controlled d6 for most of the game.
Sep-03-09  messachess: Lots of nice moves by the wily Nigel. After 30.Rd7 black is so helpless. It's the difference apparently that 200 or so rating points makes at this level.
Sep-03-09  JonathanJ: <beenthere240> ask morphy, that's why you shouldn't play the sicilian ;)
Sep-03-09  kackhander: <Nigel Short on 19.Bf4

The pawn on f4 is of course a weakness. In capturing the bishop, however, Black parts with his best placed piece and opens both the d-file and the h1-a8 diagonal unfavourably. The main point of Bf4 is, obviously, to vacate the d6 square for the knight, from where it will exert tremendous pressure on the Black position and the long-suffering bishop in particular. Note that Black's light-sqaure bishop took no further part in the game. I agree that 18.Bf4 is an advanced concept, or at least it wasn't obvious to me anyway. I judged at the time, perhaps erroneously, that it was superior to the simple manoeuvre Ne4-d2-c4-e5 (my original idea). Such finely balanced decisions are one of the things that makes chess so attractive, don't you think?>

tamar: The scores/timesheets at the site tell the same story Nigel revealed above.

Short thought for 5:36 on 18 Qb3

and after 18...Nd5, Kostenko 6:35

16:54 his longest think of the day for 19 Bf4 , letting Kostenko weaken his pawn structure but give up his centralized knight.

Kostenko took the knight after a 2:36 delay, having used a lot of time in the opening.

Sep-03-09  JamTin: I'm not sure what goes on with the live game feeds sometimes, but when I logged on to the tournament site yesterday it was showing Nigel as having just played 11 Qd4 attacking the rook but placing the queen en prise to the bishop! It was corrected after an anxious couple of minutes!
Sep-03-09  aragorn69: <beenthere240: 23. Rxe6 is a cute shot.> I liked 29.Nf7+! as well (if 29.-Rxf7 30.Rd8+! Rf8 31.Rxf8+ Bxf8 32.Qe5+ Bg7 33.Qb8+ Bf8 34.Qxf8 mate)
Sep-03-09  birthtimes: 22...Qc7 is better than 22...Qh4 and 23. Bxe6 is better than 23. Rxe6. 26...Qxe3 followed by 27...Bxb2 is better than 26...Qa4. Many mistakes by Black and one big one by White.
