Peligroso Patzer: <ray keene: *** -i hade been expecting black to construct a defence around giving up his knight for white's king side and then trying to eliminate the q side pawns to get an endgame of r and b v rook. *** >

The vast majority of such positions are theoretical draws, of course, but in Ivanchuk's current form (or lack thereof), it would have been a significant practical question whether he could have held such an ending. In practice the defender often goes astray, including a recent example where as strong an endgame player as Kamsky (in significant time pressure, it should be mentioned) missed a couple of forced drawing lines: Akopian vs Kamsky, 2009

ray keene: <peligroso patzer> yes good observation-even r and n v r has some potential-see whites winning efforts in smeets v timman staunton memorial london 2008--i once won the ending of b and b v n-see keene v sanz alicante 1975, when it was considered by theory to be a draw. now we know it is a win!

Peligroso Patzer: Onischuk vs L Dominguez, 2008 is a recent example where the defense went astray in pawnless R+N vs. R leading to a decisive result.
May-19-09  Marmot PFL: Maybe long endings are not Onischuk's thing - Kosteniuk vs Onischuk, 2005

keypusher: ...and down goes Chucky again. It's nice to see Shirov out front, but I am sorry it is at Ivanchuk's expense.
May-19-09  Eyal: Good endgame play by Shirov. After 43...Nc6? 44.Rf7+ White's g-pawn becomes too strong - 43...Kg5 or Re5 instead would have allowed Black more fighting chances.

Shirov's 12.Bc2, keeping the bishop, seems to be a novelty (at least on the higher levels) - usually White goes for Bxe6.

May-19-09  Jim Bartle: My thoughts exactly. Still I bet Shirov would sacrifice a lot to be on the other side of this (the Qg7 game): Ivanchuk vs Shirov, 1996
May-19-09  timhortons: 43...ke3 must be chuckys best move.

Shirov - Ivanchuk

May-19-09  KastelFhlor: In my opinion Ivanchuk's big problem was his knight at c5. It did almost nothing for 13 moves or so. I wonder if 11...♘xb3 is not somewhat better for Black?
May-19-09  notyetagm: MONOKROUSSOS:

<<<<43...Re2?!>>> It does seem, however, that this move is a mistake, because Black's rook creates no threats while the knight has lots its chance to be activated. [43...Nd5+ 44.Kd4 Ne7 45.Rd6 Re2 46.Rf6+ Kg5 47.Rf7 Kh4 48.a3 Kxh3 49.g5 Kg4 50.Be4 Kxg5 51.Rxe7 Rxb2 52.Ke5 b4 is a continuation of the messiness. White is better, but winning? I don't know.]

44.a3 <<<Nc6?>>> 45.Rf7+ <<<Kg3?>>> 46.g5 <<<Re3+?!>>> 47.Kd2 <<<Rb3?>>> 48.g6 Rxb2+ 49.Kc1 [After 49.Kc1 Rg2 50.g7 Kxh3 51.g8Q Rxg8 52.Bxg8 Black's queenside pawns are scant compensation for the rook.] 1-0>

Monokroussos gives ? or ?! annotations to a whole *slew* of Ivanchuk moves.

Chucky is *really* playing badly these days.

May-19-09  Eyal: Btw, having looked at Monokroussos' comments I should note that Shirov's "novelty" on move 12, which I mentioned earlier, turns out to be of only transpositional significance - the position arising after 14...Qxd4 is actually well-known (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...).
May-20-09  Eyal: <Ivanchuk's loss this time looks like a perfectly reasonable way to lose a slightly inferior endgame to one of our best endgame players. Shirov made steady progress in R+B vs R+N and the win required no tragic blunders or mental trips to Pluto by Ivanchuk. The end came quicker than it needed to, perhaps, but despite his tremendous technical skills Ivanchuk has never enjoyed the long defense of a losing cause.> (http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt...)
May-20-09  Eyal: After 16.Rxd1:

This position has already been reached several times via [...] 9.Nbd2 Nc5 10.c3 Be7 11.Bc2 d4 12.cxd4 Nxd4 13.Nxd4 Qxd4 14.Nf3 Qxd1 15.Rxd1 0–0 - that is, with an <extra tempo for White> (who skips Re1), and yet has always ended in a draw...

LIFE Master AJ: Nice win by Shirov, "Chucky" is having a really bad tournament thus far.
May-23-09  Marmot PFL: <KastelFhlor> I would say no, because it trades the Bb3 but activates two other pieces, Nd2 and Bc1. However I liked most of black's moves and he still got a slightly worse ending so it is not clear what his best course was.
May-23-09  Marmot PFL: The most critical line might be 12...d3, and the outcome of the game could depend on the fate of that pawn.
May-23-09  refutor: by move 24 what does Rybka say? White must be better...he has control of the d-file and for Black to fight for the d-file, he will allow White to use him tempi to get his king into action. if Rybka doesn't say that White is better, at least White's position is possible to play for a win.
May-27-09  HAPERSAUD: give a grandmaster a pawn and he will be happy, let him use that pawn and you will suffer :(
