| May-19-09 | | Eyal: Good endgame play by Shirov. After 43...Nc6? 44.Rf7+ White's g-pawn becomes too strong - 43...Kg5 or Re5 instead would have allowed Black more fighting chances. Shirov's 12.Bc2, keeping the bishop, seems to be a novelty (at least on the higher levels) - usually White goes for Bxe6. |

Shirov made steady progress in R+B vs R+N and the win required no tragic blunders or mental trips to Pluto by Ivanchuk. White must be better...he has control of the d-file and for Black to fight for the d-file, he will allow White to use him tempi to get his king into action. if Rybka doesn't say that White is better, at least White's position is possible to play for a win. |
