May-19-09 | | virginmind: fritz thinks 44.a3 gives +1.17 |
May-19-09 | | Nimzonick: Aside from obviously not taking a long time to think when he is at the board, Ivanchuk has spent a lot of time walking around today. But why? |
May-19-09 | | Marmot PFL: Another bad day for Ivanchuk. |
May-19-09
 | | ray keene: i wd also not be surprised if this ended as a draw too-in spite of what fritz says! |
May-19-09 | | virginmind: oops, 46...Re3 and now its +3.04 |
May-19-09 | | Marmot PFL: With the g pawn running free and all black pawns attackable by the white bishop it looks hopeless. |
May-19-09 | | TheBB: <Nimzonick> Chucky is as Chucky does. |
May-19-09 | | virginmind: oh dear, 47...Rb3 and +5.26 if 48.g6 |
May-19-09 | | TheBB: I'm interested to know how Chucky thinks he can stop the pawn, or even get a perpetual, if that's what he's trying. |
May-19-09 | | Nimzonick: I personally got the impression that Ivanchuk just hasn't had his head in this game. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's gone from playing bad to worse after a string of tough losses. Then again, I really have no frame of reference for what Ivanchuk was thinking going into this game. |
May-19-09 | | Marmot PFL: 45...Kg5 at least lets black slow down the pawns but it almost seemed like he had already given up. |
May-19-09 | | malthrope: <TheBB: <Nimzonick> Chucky is as Chucky does.> Can't possibly phrase it any better than that! ;) |

May-19-09 | | waustad: Does he slip below 2700 with this? He was at 2707. He needs a vacation, but is scheduled for the next big tourney. |
May-19-09 | | malthrope: Thanks <CG.com> :)) |
May-19-09
 | | ray keene: i am sure there were better defences-moving the king away from and behind the passed white g pawn wasnt the plan i had in mind i must say-it all fell apart very quickly after that-i hade been expecting black to construct a defence around giving up his knight for whites king side and then trying to eliminate the q side pawns to get an endgame of r and b v rook. however it was not to be! |
May-19-09 | | outplayer: Maybe this is one of the best games of Shirov's carrier. |
May-19-09 | | rogge: <waustad: Does he slip below 2700 with this? He was at 2707. He needs a vacation, but is scheduled for the next big tourney.> He's at 2702 at the moment, and 'needs' to lose one more game. |
May-19-09 | | virginmind: <waustad> that would be bucharest-bazna 'kings tournament' 16-25 june, with shirov, radjabov, kamsky, gelfand and nisipeanu. i hope a month would be enough to rest and he wont retire from that one... |
May-19-09 | | outplayer: I learn to speak (or should I say write) with Ray Keene's comments. |
May-19-09 | | outplayer: In fact I would like to read a book by Mr. Keene about Nimzovitsch but it is not available anymore. |
May-19-09

 | | Peligroso Patzer: <ray keene: *** -i hade been expecting black to construct a defence around giving up his knight for white's king side and then trying to eliminate the q side pawns to get an endgame of r and b v rook. *** > The vast majority of such positions are theoretical draws, of course, but in Ivanchuk's current form (or lack thereof), it would have been a significant practical question whether he could have held such an ending. In practice the defender often goes astray, including a recent example where as strong an endgame player as Kamsky (in significant time pressure, it should be mentioned) missed a couple of forced drawing lines: Akopian vs Kamsky, 2009 |
May-19-09
 | | ray keene: <peligroso patzer> yes good observation-even r and n v r has some potential-see whites winning efforts in smeets v timman staunton memorial london 2008--i once won the ending of b and b v n-see keene v sanz alicante 1975, when it was considered by theory to be a draw. now we know it is a win! |
May-19-09
 | | Peligroso Patzer: Onischuk vs L Dominguez, 2008 is a recent example where the defense went astray in pawnless R+N vs. R leading to a decisive result. |
