May-14-09  cade: Oh come on! Chucky :(
May-14-09  Shockwave: 47.h4+! is a cute zugzwang trap
May-14-09  Dieago: Clever ending by Wang
May-14-09  cade: The trap at the end is amazing though. Fair play to Wang, that was a beautiful finish.
May-14-09  acirce: Yes, Black would have been lost if not for 47..h4+!, but since that wins it is good enough. What I am curious about is if Wang had seen this already when playing 43..Ke5 (allowing the "clever" 44.Bxg5).
May-14-09  Notagm: Could White have escaped had he played 48. Kf2 or g2?
May-14-09  whiteshark: Nice trap of White's King.
May-14-09  hedgeh0g: Bad luck, Chuck.
May-14-09  benjinathan: I found 44.Bxg5 to be a surprising move but I guess it is because of this (but I would have thought there was better):

44.Bxg5 Nxg5 45.Bxc6 bxc6 46.gxh5 gxh5 47.f4+ Kf5 48.fxg5 Kxg5

Maybe not

May-14-09  dumbgai: I'd like to see Kasparov's reaction after 47...h4+.
May-14-09  Udit Narayan: the final position: LOL!
May-14-09  messachess: Very hard to see at move 44. that black's g5 pawn was poisoned, even though black's winner comes only 3 moves later. (He'd of had to see about 8-ply.) Good game by Chucky except for that. And, congrats. to Yue.

keypusher: I bet that trap will show up in quite a few books in the years to come.
May-14-09  Ezzy: 'If it doesn't rain it pours' - Ivanchuk must be feeling devasted. There's nothing worse than a terrible loss, but to follow it up with another one is too much for the head.

He must of been thinking he had a very small chance for a win, with an easy draw and no risk of losing. Kaissa will tell you that chess is not that simple. There are hidden resources in chess positions that you can't believe exist. 47...h4! was one of those resources.

I'm gutted for the guy. When you're on a bad run, the chess gods are unforgiving. How he reacts to all this is anyones guess. His confidence will have hit rock bottom.

It's horrible seeing this happen to Ivanchuk because he's a chess superstar. Funny game chess though, it only takes a nice win to get your mood to change. Things are declining pretty quick for our Chucky though, and he needs to seriously review whether he should take a bit of a break from chess and recharge them batteries. I can't see it though.

Tough days ahead for one of the worlds most popular players.

May-14-09  KastelFhlor: Kf2 leaves the pawns on g file undefended, then it is hard to stop black's two connected pawns

keypusher: <benjinathan> I defer to real experts but it seems like from your diagram White could play c2-c3, b3-b4 and b4-b5, trying to take advantage of Black's doubled pawns to get a passed pawn on the a file.

E.g. (from the diagram) 49. c3 c5 50. b4 Kf5 51. b5 axb5 52. a5 and White wins. I am sure there are plenty of better moves for both sides but maybe that was Ivanchuk's idea.

May-14-09  Atking: This game should be renamed: ChukWang !
(Sorry I couldn't resist)
May-14-09  pulsar: Ivanchuk's poor form continues. Somebody please give the guy the much-needed break.
May-14-09  Bobsterman3000: I wonder if Wang will tell us when he first realized that 47. h4+ wins...
May-15-09  benjinathan: <keypusher> I think you are right. He saw the position in my diagram, but obvioulsy did not see h4.
May-15-09  FHBradley: This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a wang.
May-15-09  ahmadov: This is a very nice game by Yue indeed... To create such a position against Ivanchuk needs great skills...
May-15-09  kellmano: Super finish from Wang. A motif i have never seen before.
May-15-09  Demadone: Very clever play!!!
May-15-09  Demadone: Good return after a great mistake against Dominguez (Kf3).
