Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-29-08  Eyal: Nice finish by Gustafsson. 20...Nxf6 would lose to 21.Rxb7+!
Jun-29-08  Gouki: whats the finish?
Jun-29-08  messachess: Gustafsson kicks some serious b... in this game--looked like a skittles game.
Jun-29-08  luzhin: Remarkable that Black is already in a hopeless position by move 19. White's knight is a monster: if 19..fxe5 20.Qg5+ and if 20...Ke8 then 21.Nc6! wins and if 20...Kf8 then 21.Nxe6+ does the trick. Perhaps Black should have played 17..Qe3+ 18.Kh1 Qxe4-- it could hardly be worse than the game continuation.
Jun-29-08  Elxiddicus: What a crazy attack!
A couple of questions:
What if 18. ...f5?
What's the finish?
Jun-29-08  luzhin: Elxiddicus, after 18...f5 19.Qg5+ Ke8 20.Qg7 Ke7 (if 20...Rf8 21.Nxe6!) 21.Nxf5+!! exf5 22.Rxd7+ Kxd7 23.e6+ winning the Queen.
Jun-29-08  luzhin: ...and in the final position, after 23..Rxd1+ 24 Rxd1 the combined threats of Re1 and Nd5+ are decisive.
Jun-30-08  Daugmatas: What if Black is playing 19...Qxf4? Does White have a clear win?
Jun-30-08  TheBB: I guess the key combination is

19...Qxf4 20. Nc6+ bxc6 21. Rxd7+ Kxd7 22. Qxf7+ Kc8 23. Qxe6+ Kc7 24. Qd6+ Kc8 25. Rxc8#

Jun-30-08  JonathanJ: really great game!
Jun-30-08  MarkThornton: This is the second time that Gustafsson has smashed Naiditsch in recent months: Naiditsch vs J Gustafsson, 2007 is also a quick crush for him, but with the Black pieces.
Jun-30-08  Brown: I like white's combo after 20...Nxf6 21.Rxb7+ Nd7 <...Rxb7 22.Nc6+ Kf8 23.Qh6+ Kg8 24.Rxd8+ Ne8 25Rxe8#> 22.Nc6+ Ke8 23.Nxb8 Rxb8 24.Rbxd7
Jul-01-08  arsen387: wow <BB> great. I tried to find it yesterday and failed. Well found!
Jul-01-08  Eyal: <luzhin: White's knight is a monster: if 19..fxe5 20.Qg5+ and if 20...Ke8 then 21.Nc6! wins and if 20...Kf8 then 21.Nxe6+ does the trick. Perhaps Black should have played 17..Qe3+ 18.Kh1 Qxe4.>

In fact, the monster strikes in this case as well with 19.Nf5+! Qxf5 (better, but still losing in the long run is 19...exf5 20.Re1) 20.Rxd7+! Kxd7 21.Qxf7+ etc.

Jul-02-08  TheBB: <arsen387> Thanks :P. I have my moments.
Jul-02-08  cade: Why not 11...Qxc3+
Jul-03-08  Ziggurat: <cade> My guess: After 12. Kf1 black has to recapture one of the bishops. 12...gxf6 runs into 13. Rc1 followed by Rc8+. If 12...Bxb5+ then 13. Nxb5 Qxf6 14. Nc7+.

Domdaniel: Everything up to 15...Ke7 has been seen several times before, and Black has even won a couple of them. But White's 16.f4 looks better than the rook moves played in most previous games, and neither 16...Qxc3 nor 17...Rab8 is good for Black. I think he's lost by then - but not before.

Admittedly it's hard to be optimistic about black's game after 16.f4. Maybe he could try to double rooks on the g-file - but white's threat of Nf5+ is always a danger.
