Jan-21-07  chessic eric: <Wild Bill> Nc3+ , Nd1
Jan-21-07  Eyal: <Ingolf: Kb3 should do the trick> Why should black allow Kxg6 (with Nf6-Ne4-Nd2+ and wins the queen on f1 if the pawn keep advancing)? Both 56...g5 and f3 (making room for the black knight on f4, besides advancing the pawn) win easily.

If Black doesn't keep advancing the pawn, then why play Kb3 in the first place and sacrifice the g6 pawn?

Jan-21-07  artemis: 56. ... f3 57. Nc3+ Kb4 58. Nd1 gets the knight to f2
Jan-21-07  chessic eric: <Eyal: If black doesn't keep advancing, why sac g6> true.
Jan-21-07  Ingolf: <eyal> Hadn't seen that fork on d2
Jan-21-07  Wild Bill: <artemis:> Thanks. I didn't see that Nc3 was check.

Time for the next cup of coffee on Sunday morning in California.

Jan-21-07  chessic eric: Nc3+ then Ne4 might be better than Nd1.
Jan-21-07  Eyal: If Ne4 then Nh4 by Black.
Jan-21-07  Shep0925: why is Radja carrying on? This is over (-2.33) according to Fritz.
Jan-21-07  zapzowie: I predict a draw because the black king is too far away and white will sac his knight and gobble up black pawns with his king.
Jan-21-07  euripides: Black is two pawns up already so if Fritz only sees a -2.3 advantage that suggests id hasn't found a clear win.
Jan-21-07  chessic eric: <Shep> thankfully they don't have the computer there.
Jan-21-07  cjrubiks: <Shep>Because one slipup by Aronian makes this a draw. Sure, it's theoretically won, but there are still some practical problems left. I wouldn't want to have to win this against an equally-rated opponent.
Jan-21-07  Eyal: <Shep0925: why is Radja carrying on? This is over (-2.33) according to Fritz.> Maybe Radja doesn't have access to Fritz...
Jan-21-07  Marmot PFL: Neither does Aronian...but he seems to be winning now anyway.
Jan-21-07  Eyal: Well, it looks rather straightforward now: the black king approaches to the kinside and White would have to sac his knight for the f pawn.
Jan-21-07  euripides: Pono is making a stunning comeback, by the way.

Fritz's assessments of this type of position are notoriously unreliable. White still has reasonable drawing chances.

tamar: Getting close to tablebase territory.
Jan-21-07  euripides: I guess the knight makes its last stand on h1 to waste Black's time.
Jan-21-07  SCUBA diver: K-h6 and it is a draw. ........
Jan-21-07  chessic eric: <Eyal> but if black spends time brining the king over, white has the time to bring his to g5.
Jan-21-07  chessic eric: 61...Kd3! is what i hadn't seen. If now 62.Ng3,Nf5 wins doesn't it?
Jan-21-07  Eyal: <If now 62.Ng3,Nf5 wins doesn't it?> Exactly
