PeterLalic: The game is anti-climactic, but the pun is worth it. A bit like the film, it's so bad that it's good!

Is 13...d5 premature? It is difficult for me to pinpoint Black's mistake without an engine. However, with the benefit of hindsight, he should develop the queenside before blowing open the centre.

Nov-28-22  catlover: Love the pun.

I was surprised that black resigned since he was "only a pawn down." CG's engine evaluates the final position +4.45.

Nov-28-22  Amarande: <catlover: I was surprised that black resigned since he was "only a pawn down." CG's engine evaluates the final position +4.45.>

If only it was only about the pawn Black might not have resigned. But the pawn doesn't even matter, it was White's Queen getting to c5 and mate on the dark squares in short order. Not only is Qg5-f6 threatened immediately, but Be4xc6 followed by Qe5, and it doesn't look like there's a reasonable thing to be done.

E.g.,

24 ... Qb7 25 Be4 Rac8 26 Bxc6 Rxc6 27 Qe5 f6 28 Qxf6 and too much is hanging in the wind (and if 28 ... Qd7? 29 Rd1! is curtains).

24 ... Qc7 25 Be4 Rac8 26 Bxc6 Qxc6 27 Qe5, and Black will have to hang the Bishop to begin with (27 ... f6 etc.).

24 ... Qd7 25 Rad1, and something's going to give.

24 ... f5 (in order to prevent both Be4 and Qg5) 25 Rxe6! wins a piece right off, as Black can't recapture without losing his Queen (25 ... Qxe6 26 Bb3, etc.).

An Englishman: Good Evening: Inspired pun. 13...d5 might seem to have satisfactory results in the database, but this 1999 game constitutes its most recent appearance. That means that either White completely refuted the line--or that too many players have "annotated by result," instead of feeding the variation to their silicon monsters.

24...Ra7 25. Qg5 f5 and now <Amarande>'s motif, <26. Rxe6> Qxe6 27. Bb3 Rd5 28. Qe3 Kf7 29. Re1, winning material.
Nov-28-22  patfoley: Perhaps 24 …Ra7, 25 Be4, Rc7 26 Qg5 f5 27 BxN
Nov-28-22  ajile: I approve of any and ALL horrific puns.
Nov-28-22  Brenin: 13 ... d5 looks risky to me, but after 14 dxe5 I think that 14 ... Nxe4 may be better than 14 ... dxe4. e.g. 15 Qe2 Be6 16 Bxe4 dxe4 17 Qxe4 Bd5 18 Qe2 Nc4 19 Bf4 Qc6, with some pressure compensating for the P. It's not ideal, but it looks better than the game line.

ajk68: 24...Rd5 is a somewhat obvious continuation and also the most stubborn.

It's not a quick win for white but it's drawn out agony for black. Black ends up with down a couple pawns with a shattered and weak pawn structure, while white has the bishop pair and decent pawn structure. There are really no drawing prospects.

Nov-28-22  goodevans: Black appears to have demonstrated more foresight in his resignation than in any of his play leading up to that point.

Nice pun. Amusing and apt.

  offramp: The pun bites.
Nov-28-22  Cheapo by the Dozen: The point of the resignation seems to be that, already down a pawn, Black has to pitch further material to avert mate. Sacrificing the exchange (for the DSB) seems to suffice, but that's bad enough.

So I guess you're right, there is a win there. But I would have played on a few more moves.
