May-11-15  zb2cr: 28. Qg8+, Rxg8; 29. Nf7# with a smothered mate.
May-11-15  Chess Dad: Smother-mate.

Although I would not label it as "very easy." If you've never seen one before, you don't find this one very easily.

But if you have, it takes only a few seconds.

May-11-15  CHESSTTCAMPS: If I had a choice of one tactical theme among all available 2-move combinations to teach a young beginning chess player, this is the one I would choose.

Penguincw: Hmm, looks like it's smothered mate, but not quite smothered mate, since the traditional windmill doesn't happen. 28.Qg8+ Kxg8 29.Nf7# 1-0.

Unusally crowded position here.

May-11-15  john barleycorn: <Penguincw: ... 28.Qg8+ Kxg8 29.Nf7# 1-0>

Make it 28.Qg8+ Rxg8 29.Nf7#. Simply looks better and is according to the rules :-)

gawain: A smothered mate on a very crowded board.

How did they get to move 28 with so few casualties? The first capture does not occur until move 23, and Black resigns with all of his pieces on the board, save a single pawn.

What an odd game.

May-11-15  awfulhangover: I am probably the only one who spent 2 minutes on this. Facepalm!
May-11-15  BOSTER: <PB: 28.Nf7+ wins the exchange. Probably not necessary to look at any other checks>. I guess you are wrong.
After 28. Nf7+ Rxf7 29.Qxf7 white queen could

May-11-15  thegoodanarchist: Rety was not ready, and he certainly is no Reti.
May-11-15  thegoodanarchist: 27... Be6 avoids mate but loses a piece. I guess the best approach in this position is to hope White doesn't see the mating tactic.
May-11-15  BOSTER: <dfcx :31.Bc4! >. Even without "smart " 29...Be6 black could play 29...Rf8, and after white queen retreat play 30... gxf5 with nice game.
May-11-15  Gato: Eleven white pieces can be removed so that the mate stands still !

True or false ?

May-11-15  Bycotron: By move 15, black is using the "curl into the fetal position, cry, and hope the pain goes away" defense. It was not effective.
May-11-15  Longview: took me a while to tumble to the smothered mate. I have visual pattern challenges some days. I kept wanting to use the f pawn in some invasive and revealed attack way. Finally saw the first move's value.

(sorry for late response, I just got home)

Anyway, writing 1-0 or 0-1 after checkmate is just something I like to do, that no one else does (another example is the Prediction Contests, where I type 1/2-1/2 instead of 1/2). I know it's long, but it looks "complete".

As for the rule part, I don't play OTB, so I don't know. :)

May-11-15  Bycotron: Penguincw, your move 28...Kxg8 is illegal. That is what john was pointing out. ;)

As for 1-0 and 1/2-1/2 notation. It is extremely common and used in virtually all chess publications, so you need not feel that nobody else uses it.
