Obituary:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obi...

May-26-11  FrogC: From that Telegraph obituary:

"He lived for a time in a deserted barracks, where a cook gave him an enormous lunch each day then, on government orders, threw out leftovers that could have fed some 200 others. He also recalled laying out a chessboard when a German soldier came in and sat down to play, using the King's Gambit. But the German was ordered to leave before he won, and Rety was still at the board when a Soviet soldier with a machine gun burst in and finished the game."

Eric Schiller: Knew him well when I lived in London, quite a character. Turned up at many chess events.

<John was born in Hungary, but was unrelated to Richard Reti. Chess was central to his life.
