northernfox: I have a question about the Fritz 18 chess playing program, and had no idea where to ask for information on this. So here it is.

My question relatés to the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the adjustable Elo strength in this program. I am not à strong player, but for many years I played tournament mode classical games against Fritz 12, and found my playing strength to be roughly in the range of 1500 by working to even results against what the engine considered to be a strength for it of 1500 or à bit less.

Now I have just obtained the Fritz 18 playing software, and when I started to play against it set to around 1450 Elo (just to give me a sense of I the emgine's strength, I find I am beating the engine very badly by virtue of some very weak moves it's making. Thus the Fritz 12 seems to the enginevery easily at this adjustable Elo, particularly as compared to Fritz 12 set to the same Elo level.

Does anyone have any expérience or thoughts on this kind of situation?

Thanks in advance.

fredthebear: You might try posting your question to beatgiant forum but he's often out: User: beatgiant

Kibitzer Cafe is a good place to ask general questions, but the musicians there don't play much chess: The Kibitzer's Café

You might contact the company Fritz help line, or the person/place that sold you Fritz.

Have you asked Quora? https://help.quora.com/hc/en-us/art...

Or, adjust the ELO strength to a higher level and keep on playing!

In fact I hardly know anything about it, but a good place to discuss this would be the Fritz page https://chessgames.com/perl/chesspl...

To give a quick answer, as far as I understand, the engine developers use a rule of thumb like "1 ply of search = 200 Elo" but the actual strength can vary quite a bit from that estimate, because there's a lot more to engines than the search depth.
