Domdaniel: Paulsen rarely played this well with sight of the board. If he'd kept his eyes shut playing Morphy, chess history might be very different.
Feb-14-18  schnarre: ...15. Ng6 was classic! Black never really recovers.

FSR: I tried to submit <Be My Valentine> for this game, but someone beat me to it.
Nov-22-20  Messiah: <FSR: I tried to submit <Be My Valentine> for this game, but someone beat me to it.>

Don't worry, you can submit practically any finite ASCII string to any game here, it will eventually make it to the GOTD archives, with surprising ease.

MissScarlett: The <Morning Chronicle> report of December 18th has Francis Burden as one of the starters, and <Soon after the play had commenced Mr. Burden, of No.5 Board, resigned, and was succeeded by Mr. V. de Vere.>

This detail doesn't feature in Loewenthal's report in the <Era>, and is particularly interesting because Burden is reputed to have been de Vere's chess mentor, so the whole thing smells of a ploy to get his young charge (then 15, but reported to be 13) a place on the big stage. It's not made clear if de Vere started a new game or took up Burden's but I presume the latter.
