| Dec-18-06 | | zb2cr: Took about a minute to find this one. I was considering 20. Re8+, Kxe8; 21. Qxc8+, Ke7; 22. Be6+, Kf6; 23. Qd8+, Kf5; 24. Nd4+ forking the Black Queen. I then decided this was too complicated for a Monday puzzle, went looking for the alternative, and found it. |

I looked at other lines, too, but how could one not part with the lady to deliver mate in 2? <madaros> <magician>: after 20. Ne5 (which seems to threaten an immediate Nxf7 mate), what about 20... Be7, to give the poor Black K a flight square at e8? Incidentally, I also tried to make 20. Re8+ work, but after 20... Kxe8 21. Qxc8+ Ke7 22. Re1+ Kf6, I couldn't find a way to stop ...Kg6-h7-g8. I figured there must be something faster, given the bad, restricted Black K position and the battery of White rooks. That's when I went back to the idea of using the 8th rank and found 20. Qxc8+ almost immediately. |

| Dec-18-06 | | dzechiel: Found it on my third candidate move. I first considered 20 Bc7+ but after ...Nxc7 I didn't see anything. The I looked at 20 Re8+ Kxe8 21 Qxc8+, but the black king seemed to get away. Only then did I look at 20 Qxc8+ and of course saw the immediate checkmate. This whole process took about 15 seconds. Since it was Monday, I should have looked at the queen sacrifice first! |

| Dec-18-06 | | Themofro: A nice puzzle. I also first considered Re8 but couldn't see a forced advantage off the bat or anything, so switched the move order. Rather nice game in which the queen-side bishop is very powerful. its interesting to note the bishops power versus the king in the center, it's similair to the bishop's power after black has castled queenside in many positions after the defending side's defensive knight has been taken off the board. |
