alexmagnus: Got this one IMMEDIATELY. Hey, my tactics skills seem to get better - last week got everything but Sunday and this week first time I solve ANY puzzle just looking at it for a moment. Earlier I had trouble even with Monday puzzles.
Dec-18-06  siilarsi: <ahmadov: ... Still, it is really embarrasing to miss a Monday puzzle. This happens for the first time with me.>

Missing a monday puzzle might be embarrasing for some, but id dosen´t make you a bad chessplayer, even Kramnik, Topalov and the like miss stuff like this once in a while.

Dec-18-06  greensfield: Hey, for all you cat skinning fans are there any more ways than:- 20. Qxc8+
20.Re8+
20.Ne5
20.Ng5
that end up in forced mate?
Dec-18-06  Rubenus: Got it in less than 15 seconds. Nice game and nice solution.
Dec-18-06  blair45: I agree with Infohunter -- the idea is to find the shortest, most forced line.Other lines are like reading a Charles Dickens novel -- eventually it gets to the point.
Dec-18-06  vibes43: Thanks for a good puzzle and the ensuing discussions regarding alternate solutions. I got the text solution after burning time studying alternatives that I didn't follow to mate. However, the first forced mating line I discover would be my choice in CG as well as OTB.
Dec-18-06  Rajiv Herman Kramer: <Missing a monday puzzle might be embarrasing for some, but id dosen´t make you a bad chessplayer, even Kramnik, Topalov and the like miss stuff like this once in a while>

Don't forget how Drawnik overlooked the mate in one against Fritz.

benveniste: <Fisheremon>, Black can hold out a little longer on your line by 24... ♘b8.
Dec-18-06  zb2cr: Took about a minute to find this one. I was considering 20. Re8+, Kxe8; 21. Qxc8+, Ke7; 22. Be6+, Kf6; 23. Qd8+, Kf5; 24. Nd4+ forking the Black Queen. I then decided this was too complicated for a Monday puzzle, went looking for the alternative, and found it.
Dec-18-06  nimzo knight: Monday we love you !! I always solve the monday, but then wonder if I could have done it in actual game.
Dec-18-06  nimzo knight: This deserves to be game of the day sometime
Dec-18-06  YouRang: Heh, I found 20. Ne5 (which forces black to surrender his queen to avoid immediate mate), and stopped looking.
Dec-18-06  brainzugzwang: Other people have noted there appear to be many ways to win, as there should be with White's position. I looked at other lines, too, but how could one not part with the lady to deliver mate in 2?

<madaros> <magician>: after 20. Ne5 (which seems to threaten an immediate Nxf7 mate), what about 20... Be7, to give the poor Black K a flight square at e8?

Incidentally, I also tried to make 20. Re8+ work, but after 20... Kxe8 21. Qxc8+ Ke7 22. Re1+ Kf6, I couldn't find a way to stop ...Kg6-h7-g8. I figured there must be something faster, given the bad, restricted Black K position and the battery of White rooks. That's when I went back to the idea of using the 8th rank and found 20. Qxc8+ almost immediately.

Dec-18-06  kevin86: I first looked to Re8+ followed by Qxc8+,then I saw a possible check at c7-no dice. I went back to my first idea and reversed the moves,VOILA! A mate in two.

Just a report on how my "lame brain" solved this one, lol.

Dec-18-06  dzechiel: Found it on my third candidate move. I first considered 20 Bc7+ but after ...Nxc7 I didn't see anything. The I looked at 20 Re8+ Kxe8 21 Qxc8+, but the black king seemed to get away. Only then did I look at 20 Qxc8+ and of course saw the immediate checkmate. This whole process took about 15 seconds. Since it was Monday, I should have looked at the queen sacrifice first!
Dec-18-06  nateinstein: <Eurotrash: Haha, this is exactly why you should never analyze your games with Fritz - its a real joy-killer! You think you've played a great game, then the damn silicon beast finds a ten times better finish in about 0.01 seconds!> Actually it's closer to 0.000000000000000001 seconds. Unless of course you're using a 486, then you're probably right.
Dec-18-06  benched: Why does Qc7+ not work? After Nxc7 isnt Bxc7# or am i missing something?

WannaBe: <benched> Kxc7, there are no protection on that bishop.
Dec-18-06  Themofro: A nice puzzle. I also first considered Re8 but couldn't see a forced advantage off the bat or anything, so switched the move order. Rather nice game in which the queen-side bishop is very powerful. its interesting to note the bishops power versus the king in the center, it's similair to the bishop's power after black has castled queenside in many positions after the defending side's defensive knight has been taken off the board.
Dec-18-06  kbaumen: Easy as a pie. Even for a patzer like me.

playground player: Let's see, it's Monday, so it must be time for a Queen sac. Actually, I looked at the Rook sac first, but that didn't lead to a quick kill, so I dropped it.
Dec-18-06  devinjc: Upon seeing this position, I also instanly analyzed 20.Re8 Kxe8 21.Qxc8, and only after seeing that fail I switch the move orders. I wonder I made this mistake and why most other people thought along these lines as well.
Dec-18-06  devinjc: Talk about a lead in development: Black's bishops never move!
Dec-18-06  backyard pawn: <devinjc> Ditto. Discovered 20.Qxc8+ only after seeing that 20.Re8+ didn't win quickly.
Dec-18-06  Rank Amateur: I'm embarrassed that I missed this one, but I found Rc1 instead. Threatens mate with 21 Qxc8 and with 21 Bc7. Black can't stop both. Does this work too?
