Sep-20-21 | | agb2002: White has two pawns for a bishop.
The black knight prevents Rb6#. Hence 33.Qxc8+ Qxc8 34.Rb6#. |
|
Sep-20-21 | | Honey Blend: At first I was thinking of 38. ♕e2 threatening ♕xc4# and if 38. ... ♖b4 39. ♕b2 followed by ♕b5#. click for larger viewOnly good way to stop it is 39. ... ♘b6 and now 40. ♕xb6+ ♕xb6 41. ♖b6# concludes. Quite the anti-Monday puzzle approach but I find two quiet moves in a checkmate plot somewhat amusing. |

 | | Teyss: Aaahhh at last a good old Queen-sac Monday. |

Sep-20-21 | | saturn2: 33.Qe2 Rg4 34 Qb2 Nb7 35.Nb8 also wins |

Sep-20-21 | | saturn2: Even easier 33.Qe2 Rg4 34.f4 |

Sep-20-21 | | Brenin: Clever move, CG, selling the early birds a dummy by first posting a re-run of the trivial puzzle <T Oyunbaatar vs I Chahrani, 2008>, and then replacing it with this one. |
|
Sep-20-21 | | RookFile: Black would have a perfectly reasonable position with 10......Na6, planning 0-0-0. |
|
Sep-20-21 | | Brenin: If White really wants to torment his opponent, then 33 Qe2 Rg4 34 f4 Rxf4 35 gxf4 Qg7+ 36 Kh1 Qxc3 37 Nb8+ Ka7 (Kxa5 38 Qa2 with mate) 38 Qf2+ Ka8 39 Nc6 (threatening Rb8 mate) Qb3 40 Rxb3 cxb3 41 Qe2, with 42 Qa6+ and mate to follow, should do it. |

Sep-20-21 | | DrGridlock: I first looked at Rg6+, and noticed that it forces black to sac his queen in order to survive. (Counting material, White who starts a bishop down, gets a queen for a rook and bishop). I then noticed that after the rook and queen trade that black's knight is hanging on on c8 (after removing the protecting queen) ... hmm ... what if we reverse the order of some moves! White's Queen taking the knight first removes the guard on b6 and forces mate! |

Sep-20-21 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: After long pondering, my then 20 years young old friend Eric finally found the mate in 2 moves with the nice queen sacrifice 33.Qxc8+!,Qxc8 34.Rb6#. "How young we were, how we believed in ourselves!" (GM Eduard Gufeld). Unfortunately, during his whole life Eric drank too much coffee, which may explain the fact, that he was more a tactical than a positional player. |

|
Sep-20-21 | | RookFile: Alekhine as a rule said on every move you should examine all captures and checks. |
|
Sep-20-21
 | | HeMateMe: Did alekhine drink in bars or home, alone? |
|
Sep-21-21
 | | fredthebear: Yes. https://www.thrillist.com/culture/b... For the record, the material seemed decent when it was initially posted. Never alone; his cat was ever present.
https://www.chess.com/blog/vector99... Be warned - cats are territorial; they do not like to travel, not farther than they can see/hear from home. If given a split-second opportunity, a cat forced to travel will scram to hide in the drain, under the dumpster, or up a tree. That's probably not where you want to sit and drink for hours, waiting for the cat to decide the coast is all clear to come out (most likely late at night when the real world has gone to bed). Cats don't drink booze, just water, fresh water and milk in moderation: https://www.purina.com/articles/cat...
There is an Alekhine conspiracy: https://www.spraggettonchess.com/pa... Check first, it could be mate! |
|
Sep-21-21
 | | HeMateMe: I find it odd that some house cats are very friendly, always snuggle up with people, but others remain skittish their entire cat lives. I would think living with Alekhine would be difficult, man or beast. |

Sep-21-21
 | | fredthebear: If the queen sacrifice is accepted in the final position (33...QxQc8 34.Rb6#), it's a Vukovic Mate https://chessfox.com/vukovic-mate/ The mating rook must be supported; I don't recall seeing such w/a protective pawn on the a-file. |
|
Sep-21-21
 | | fredthebear: It is said that Alekhine http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com/a... had his beloved Siamese cat "Chess" longer than any of his three wives. I also read somewhere recently that Capablanca and Alekhine (both cat lovers & Catholics) were deeply influenced by the exhibition play of Harry Pillsbury. Harry Nelson Pillsbury Pillsbury passed away in 1906, not having played either Capa or Alekhine. |

Sep-23-21 | | RookFile: I knew Capa had been to an exhibition of Pillsbury when he was young. First I'm learning of Pillsbury's influence on Alekhine. |
