 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Pun relevant to the game, good word play, good game--we have hit the trifecta tonight. Could White have salvaged a perpetual check after 45.Qd2, which unlike 45.Qf6 threatens 46.Qd8+ while protecting the h2 pawn? |

 | | OhioChessFan: Groaner of a pun, in a good way. |

 | | sleepyirv: Too early to call Pun of the Year, but certainly going to be Pun of the Month. |

 | | HeMateMe: I like the pun. Is that from that series of swedish detective books that were turned into movies? |
|
Jan-25-25 | | goodevans: <Could White have salvaged a perpetual check after 45.Qd2... ?> I reckon so. Can't see how Black could have prevented it. Earlier, White passed up an opportunity to snatch a pawn with 32.Bxe4 dxe4 33. Bxb6 which would have given her a supported passed pawn (Black gets a passed pawn too but not supported). That would have given the game a different complexion. |

 | | Teyss: The other two titles of the trilogy would also have fitted the game: 'The Girl Who Played with Fire' and 'The Girl Who Kicked the Dragon's Lair'. <An Englishman: (...) Could White have salvaged a perpetual check after 45.Qd2, which unlike 45.Qf6 threatens 46.Qd8+ while protecting the h2 pawn?> Indeed there is prepetual since Black cannot escape with e.g.
45.Qd2 f2 46.Qd8+ Kg7 47.Qf6+ Kh6?? 48.Qf8# so White will check on the last two ranks. The other move 45.Qxf3? also give White a worse position: 45...Qxh2+ 46.Kg5 (46.Qh3?? g5+) Qxe5+ with an extra Pawn where the isolani is an asset and the extra Pawn on the Kside is worth more than White's doubled one on the Qside (-3.2 at 37 ply). Hence 43...Rf3 was a good attempt to muddy the waters in an otherwise relatively stable position. |

Jan-25-25 | | areknames: What <An Englishman> said. I like the pun a lot as I loved the Millennium Trilogy which catapulted Noomi Rapace to international stardom. Ridley Scott cast her as the lead in Prometheus because of her performance in those movies. |

Jan-25-25 | | stone free or die: Oh, and let's not forget Chuck Jones and Mel Blanc's roles as well. |
|
Jan-25-25 | | goodevans: <areknames> I would imagine more folk would be familiar with the Rooney Mara version of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Having seen both versions I’d say there was little to choose between them. They are both excellent. |
|
Jan-25-25 | | areknames: <goodevans> I agree, I have also seen them both although I certainly prefer the Swedish original. |

Jan-25-25 | | Allderdice83: I looked at 36. Bxe4 dxe4 37. Rxd7 Qxd7 38. f6, threatening 39. Qh6 and 40. Qg7#. However, Black's king can escape with 38 ... Kf8 39. Qh6+ Ke8 40. Qxh7 Kd8, and Black will win by playing, in order, Rc2, e3, Qd2, and e2 (possibly reverse the last two moves; the point is not to move the queen too soon allowing Qxf7+). In response to checks, Black will move the king over to b7 and then interpose the rook on c7. It seems to me Black is winning no matter what White tries. |
|
Jan-25-25 | | Allderdice83: <<An Englishman: (...) Qc5 46. Qd8+ Qf8?? 47. Qxf8+ Kxf8 48. Kg3 Kg7 49. Kxf3 (and on 49 ... Kh6, then 50. h4), White has a winning position. Black's king is shut out, White will capture the e pawn, and then White will bring the king to c4 and break through with b4 (not a3?? first, because then Black can respond to b4 with a4, and White can't get at the a pawn. White has to leave a3 open for the king). So Black has no alternative but to accept a draw by perpetual check with 45 ... f2, etc. |

Jan-25-25 | | belgradegambit: Thanks for all the compliments on the pun. I also prefer the original Swedish movie. I’ve played the dragon for over 50 years so I tend to submit Black wins in that variation such as Karjakin vs Radjabov, 2008 and M Perunovic vs Velimirovic, 2006 and Panov vs Simagin, 1943 |

 | | Teyss: I also prefer the Swedish film, if only because the language fits the setting & atmosphere and it came first whilst the English version, as good as it was, didn't bring anything new. The cast (Rapace / Mara and Nyqvist / Craig) was on par so that was ok. I only read the first book of the trilogy which is very good but IMHO not enough to read the other two. For info Fincher intended to film the trilogy as for the Swedish version, but due to scheduling conflicts and the fact the first movie was not a huge success, the project was abandoned. |

 | | HeMateMe: More people were killed in those books than actually are killed in Sweden, in real life! Google it. |
