Jun-24-24  mel gibson: Easy peasy Monday. LOL
Jun-24-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Direct: 39. Rxg7+ Rxg7 40. Nf6#. The king love Mondays!
Jun-24-24  stacase: OK I didn't see it straight away, as it's a Monday and Queen sacrifices must be checked out first.

39. Rxg7+ Rxg7 40. Nf6#

Now, would I see that over the board?

Jun-24-24  Allderdice83: A nice easy Monday puzzle. Deflect the rook away from guarding the f6 square, then stick the knight there. Checkmate.

takebackok: Nice, forced mate with 39. Rxd7+
Jun-24-24  Mayankk: My first hunch was to sac Queen on the 8th rank but that leads nowhere.

39 Nf6+ also doesn't work but as one moves down the list of checks (it has to be a check as White King is not too safe either), we notice the pretty 39 Rxg7+ Rxg7 40 Nf6#. An unusual mating pattern, even if all forced.

marcusantoinerome: <offramp> It seems strange at this level that <Black did not think the back rank check was dangerous.>

From his -13 score here he was obviously the fish. It appears that his historic ELO was only ~2100. The Yugoslavians (at that time) that they used to fill out the tournament bracket were not that strong.

Jun-24-24  TheaN: <39.Rxg7+ Rxg7 40.Nf6#> ends the game, just shy of time control, which I think mattered here.

<marcusantoinerome: <offramp> It seems strange at this level that <Black did not think the back rank check was dangerous.>>

Even given the score, that applies. A 2100 in 1970 should not fall for this relatively simple #4 in normal circumstances. Given that, I think Black was in severe time trouble.

Moves like 37....Rc8= are a lot less comfortable to play if you still need to scramble out three moves. Black thought 37....axb3 38.Qa8+ Kh7 was safe for now, and it does simplify the position a bit, giving Black chances with the rooks. Alas, the text ends it with a mate in two.
