Jan-03-06  Resignation Trap: Did the World Champion sell his soul to the devil to get this last-round draw with his opponent?

After 29. Kxh2 hxg3+ White is toast.

Jan-03-06  euripides: 29 Qb8+ looks possible e.g. 29... Kh7 30 Kxh2 hxg3+ 31 Qxg3 when White may be able to hold the extra piece, or perhaps 29...Rc8 30 Qe5 when a draw seems possible though it's still messy.

OlimpBase: Allegedly Teufel was short of time and took respectable draw vs a living legend.
Apr-08-12  whiteshark: <Resignation Trap> LOL (y'know devil means Teufel in German)

"Danke für dieses schöne Diagramm , aber es war so , dass der Weltmeister mir Remis anbot und dabei begann er zu zittern und auf dem Sitz zu schaukeln. - Das Schlimmste befürchtend, ergriff ich die ausgestreckte Hand und willigte in das Remis ein." -

Jan-12-22  jerseybob: <euripides: 29 Qb8+ looks possible e.g. 29... Kh7(?) 30 Kxh2 hxg3+ 31 Qxg3 when White may be able to hold the extra piece, or perhaps 29...Rc8(!) 30 Qe5 when a draw seems possible though it's still messy.> 30.Qe5,Qxe5 31.dxe5, Nxf1 etc. If 29.Kxh2,hxg3+ and now (a)30.fxg3?,Qxf1 or (b)30.Kxg3,Nf5+ looks very dangerous. TD Lothar Shmid said (CL July 1968, p.250) that Petrosian was lost.
