An Englishman: Good Morning: One of Marshall's quieter sacrificial wins, and a good demonstration of the difference between quantitative vs. qualitative development. After 18.0-0-0, White actually has more pieces in play to go with his pawn plus, but thanks to Marshall's innovation 8...Bb4+!, the d3 square proves a fine home for Black's Knight. The final mating combination is rather witty, as the same Rook & Knight pattern can mate the White King on 3 different squares (seems rather excessive to use the Queen).
Aug-10-09  birthtimes: After White's 29th move, Lasker notes, "Black is a pawn minus, but he has on d3 a strong advance post and the lines for his pieces are open. He has the advantage.

An obvious weakness in the position of the White king, is that it stands immobile, guarded on the diagonal only by an undefended weak pawn, and in front by a pawn easily attacked by a4.

Marshall looks for the combination directed against this weakness and discerns it."

NM JRousselle: This is a very important theoretical game for the Two Knights Defense. This whole line was thought to be bad for Black until Marshall found 12... Bb4+! This revived the Two Knights Defense & put it back on the chess map.

Marshall does not get credit for all his contributions to opening theory. Many know of the Marshall Gambit in the Ruy Lopez, but not many know of this game.

Jul-02-15  Smite: 29... Bf6 is nasty. Surprised this game isn't more famous.
Dec-07-21  GilGandel: Remarkable that at the finish Marshall has a discovered check to win the Queen and yet there's *still* a better move!

As Emmanuel Lasker famously said "When you see a good move, look for a better one" - when you're about to make your "good" move, you stop and ask yourself if there is a "better" move hiding somewhere on the board.
