Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-25-05  Shah Mat: saw this mate coming from a mile away. great attack.
Mar-01-05  zb2cr: You know, Black's reason for resigning is not quite clear to me. Obviously he must take the Bishop, since 19 ... Kh8 is mate in one from 20 Nxf7#. But what happens after he takes 19 ... Nxh7? 20 Qxh7+, Kf8; 21 Qh8+, Ke7; 22 Qxg7, hxg5; 23 Qxg5+, Kf8; 24 Qf6, Qd8; 25 Qxh6+, Kg8; 26 Bh4, Re7; 27 Bf6, Qf8; 28 Qh8# looks too long-winded and it doesn't all look forced. What am I missing here?

<What am I missing here?> How about 19...Nxh7 20. Qxh7+ Kf8 21. Bh4, cutting off the king's escape? If then 21...Ke7 22. Qxg7 followed by a quick mate.
Mar-02-05  JohnTal: To beatgiant:

How about 21 ...hg5, 22 Bg5 ...Ne7 that protects against 23 Qh8+ ... Ng8?

What am I missing on this line?

After 19...Nxh7 20. Qxh7+ Kf8 21. Bh4 hxg5, White interpolates <22. Qh8+> Ke7 23. Bxg5+ f6 24. Bxf6+ and mate next (24...gxf6 25. Qxf6# or 24...Kf7 25. Qxg7#).

Mar-02-05  zb2cr: <beatgiant>,
Thanks! Your line looks much more convincing than the sequence I had envisioned.
Mar-05-05  JohnTal: Right on beatgiant - resignation for GM was in order, I omitted the interpolation.

  Ron: After 19 Bh7+, Stockfish 9 gives: 19. ... Nxh7 20. Qxh7+ Kf8 21. Bh4 Ke7 22. Qxg7 Kd8 23. Nxe6+ Kc8 24. Nxc7 Kxc7

Material advantage for White great enough to win.
