Dec-25-11  King Death: I remember Chesney from tournaments here out west in the 80s, but I never played a lot. We were both about 2300 then and I don't think we ever played.
Jan-05-12  JohnBoy: <Death> - did you play SoCal? I see you are now in Oregon, but 30 yrs ago?

Maybe you played with some of my peers - DelFaro, Beelby, Frasco, Gibbons, Orfalea, the Boctors, etc. - though probably not me. I quit for school in about 1980.

Jan-05-14  Kyouko Sakura: Amazing game that that reminds us all about the strength of rooks and queens and how there were none for White.
May-13-14  SpiritedReposte: 36. ...Be3+! Slick.
Jun-07-20  Retireborn: Anyone happen to know the round number for this game?
Dec-10-24  Bruenetto: 38. Qd2 Rxd2 39. R3xd2 Kd7 40. Rf2 Ke7 41. Rdd2 (41. Rf4 Be2 42. Rd2 Bf3 43. Rh2 Rxh2 44- . Kxh2 c6) Bb3 42. Rh2 Rg8 43. Rh7 Bxa4 44. Rf2 Be8 45. Kf1 a4 46. Ke1 Kd7 47. Kd1 Kc6 48. Kc2 Kb5 49. Kb2 Kc4 50. Rfxf7 Bxf7 51. Rxf7 c5 52. dxc5 bxc5 53.Ra7 Kd3 54. Rxa4 c4
Jan-08-25  BxChess: Was this Wednesday puzzle meant to be 38?
Jan-08-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: Just knowing that W will lose, the king looks for defense: 26. Nf4 h4 27. g3 hxg3 28. fxg3 Rg7 29. Re2 Rgh7... not much inspired today.

Breunor: I don't get it? I played the move from the game but it doesn't look like a puzzle,?
Jan-08-25  mel gibson: I could see nothing great.

Stockfish 17 is calling it close to a draw
even if I force it to play the game line.
SF chooses a different line:

26. Ra2

(26. Ra2 (1.Ra2 Kb8 2.Kh1 Ka7 3.Qc1 Rh7 4.h3 Bc8 5.Qb1 Rh6 6.Rae2 Bd7 7.Qb3 Rhg6 8.Nf4 Rh6 9.Rg1 Kb8 10.Nd3 Bc8 11.Qb5 Na3 12.Qb2 Nc4 13.Qc1 Bg5 14.Qd1 Be7 ) +0.36/47 379)

score for White +0.36 depth 47.

Jan-08-25  saturn2: I took 26....Nb2 and two knights disappear from the board which favors white.

Teyss: A bit tricky for a Wednesday. 26.Nb2! (as the game line) Kb7 (other moves also lose) 27.Nd3! (sets a trap) Ka7 (what else?) 28.Nb2!! (the move I missed) Ra8 (desperately trying to defend) 29.Nd3! (the Knight is powerful) Rhb8 (realises he's lost, too late) Nb4! (the only winning move) Rb7 (aiming for stalemate) 31.Nc6#

Jan-08-25  Mayankk: Nice one <Teyss>. Now that is how a POTD is solved.

Black definitely didn't see this one coming.

scormus: <Teyss> Glad to see someone at last got this one!
Jan-08-25  Granpwa: Perhaps Nf4 with a view to Nxd5, Qf5 etc.
Jan-08-25  TheaN: I got <26.Nb2>, given the Black knight is trapped on an outpost, to simplify to ♕:2♗ in a closed position which would normally favor the side of the queen slightly more because it's easier to maneuver. It is by far not a tactical puzzle however. Also not sure what CG intended here as there doesn't seem to be a very striking tactical shot. <Teyss> okay that made me wheeze for a while thanks.

Jan-08-25  Mayankk: I actually don't mind ambiguous positions like these. Here White is trying to preserve his advantage, having snared opponent Queen for two minors.

The issue here is that there is no obvious way for White to solidify his advantage. The semi-open g and h files and the two strong Bishops mean that Black will always have tricks up his sleeve. And that's how the game panned out. Black kept pressing till White failed at 38 Qg5.

If the puzzle had a solution which allowed White to quickly simplify and keep his win, this could have still been interesting. Not really in this case though.

PawnSac: Another white to move and lose "puzzle", when there are some 25 possible moves/blunders he could make. I would not waste my energy OTB investigating every possible blunder.. an exhausting waste of time. When he moves, I'll look at it.

PawnSac: but the pun is good!
Jan-09-25  Rosbach: I don't really get it. Also not after looking the above comments. What would be the winning moves for white?
