Apr-14-04  iron maiden: This game makes me feel a lot better about playing against the French.
Apr-14-04  Minor Piece Activity: Nice play.
Jul-30-04  Knight13: Good game.
May-06-05  schnarre: The Two-Knights vs the French isn't very common, but offers a great deal of chances for the adventurous. <iron maiden> Why would you have any reservations about playing against the French?
Jun-10-05  ksadler: When playing the French, I play 1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 c5! going into a mainline Sicilian if they try to throw the 2 Knights at me. A wonderful attack by White in this game though.

Open Defence: c5 seemed a weak move leading the Knight trying to exploit d6
Oct-29-05  Karpova: @Open defence
i don't think it's too weak a move. he could have tried 8...cd or c4 instead of 8....a6 losing a tempo. he could counter any tries to bring the knight to d6 with bc7

Open Defence: <Karpova> I think 8..cxd would lead to White having pressure on the c file, 8..c4 seems a little better, however the biggest issue with c5 is that the Black ♗ on a5 seems out of the game somewhat which compunds the problems on d6
Oct-29-05  Karpova: the bishop could get into play by bc7 threatening the knight on d6 if he gets there. the bishop would be out of play anyway so maybe he should have exchanged immediately. 5...c5 doesn't change much since the bishop could only go to c5 if he gets attacked and then d4 would win a tempo for white hadn't black played 5...c5.
Jan-13-06  schnarre: A ...c5 move is thematic in nearly all French positions, but White stayed in firm control here!
Apr-12-06  DeepBlade: <schnarre> Indeed, see this line for typical French (pawn)defelopment

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 Bd7 6. a3 Nge7 7. b4 cxd4 8. cxd4

The pawnstructure is stable, and can be a dangerous weapon if used correctly, see my game in the French

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.Nf3 Nc6 5.c3 Bd7 6.Be2 Nge7 7.0–0 Qc7 8.a3 Rc8 9.b4 cxd4 10.cxd4 a6 11.Bb2 Qb6 12.Nc3 Nf5 13.Na4 Qc7 14.Nc5 Be7 15.Bd3 h6 16.Rc1 Nh4 17.Nxh4 Bxh4 18.Qg4 g5 19.g3 h5 20.Qe2 Rg8 21.Qxh5 a5 22.f4 Bxg3 23.fxg5 Bxh2+ 24.Kxh2 Rf8 25.g6 Nd8 26.g7 Bc6 27.gxf8R+ Kxf8 28.Qh6+ Ke7 29.Rg1 b6 30.Rg8 Qxe5+ 31.dxe5 bxc5 32.Qf8+ Kd7 33.Qd6# 1–0

Aug-23-08  just a kid: I got exactly par on G-T-M.Great game by Kosteniuk!
Oct-01-08  arsen387: I don't like quick wins but this one impressed me much. Fascinating tactics by Alexandra
Oct-01-08  Ladolcevita: relatively for the most part,a successful combination is established by opponet's mistake........lets imagine together, what if the person sitting there is a higer rated grandmaster,i doubt whether Kosteniuk would succeed checkating in the end.
Jan-17-09  Phantom.Nightmare: A nice quick game for enjoying in the less played Two Knights Variation of the French .
Apr-10-09  ChessYouGood: Hot game by a hot babe
Dec-05-09  djbu: i love that girl she play chess like a god =D

You guys sound like those people who play World of Warcraft all the time and then get really excited when you see a woman talking about World of Warcraft on some game review TV show.

Honza Cervenka: 10...dxc3 was a blunder. After 10...h6 or 10...f5 black gets a playable game.

HeMateMe: ...with apologies to chuck berry.
Mar-12-20  morfishine: Its funny how an improperly played French defense can make even GM's appear feeble and weak
Mar-12-20  goodevans: I thought at first this might all be opening prep but Kosteniuk's prep must have run out long before she dealt the knockout blow.

5.h4 was a novelty and clearly she could have prepared a bit beyond that but black's play is hardly forced so there's a limit to how deep her prep could have gone.

365chess has one other game with 5.h4, viz. Nepomniashchy beating Sengupta with it in 2006. CG doesn't seem to have that game but given these successes it's surprising 5.h4 hasn't been tried more often.

Ok, the last thing an even remotely reasonable player should have done is castling short one move after 5.h4. One just plays 5...Bd7 and asks White what she wants to do. Don't castle on the K-side here!

HeMateMe: Seems a thematic Bishop h7 sacrifice. Was this really new theory? Seems unlikely.
Apr-15-20  MordimerChess: About move h4, it was introduced by Alexander Alekhine 100 years ago against some variations in Frenche Defense. It's definitely useful whenever you have white pawn on e5.

I also have interesting story here. I needed quality picture for my youtube video about this game. So I contacted Mr. Gouw and asked him couple of questions. He kindly answered some of them so I decided to add them as a flavor to my material.

He was 2300+ player 10 years earlier and he really enjoyed to play in such a strong tournament. He also knew that he has no chances to he decided to play "all in" double edged game.

Here you go for more:

Enjoy and feel free to thank Mr. Gouw in comments, he's older now but he promised to watch my video.
