Jan-20-05  Knight13: I think 52. Rb1 is better but is there a threat on this move that makes Harrwitz NOT playing it?

Tough endgame.

50...Ra2 looks like a misprint in the game record. Otherwise, on move 52 White has the obvious 52. b8(Q)+ Kf5 53. Qf8+ Kg6 54. Re6+ Kh7 55. Rh6#.

Probably Black's 50th was actually a rook move on the b-file such as 50...Rb3. Does anyone have another source for this game to confirm?

Nov-30-17  yureesystem: 23.Be2 wins a piece, how can white miss a one mover?
Nov-30-17  yureesystem: WoW! Back in the 1846 they didn't play so well.On the final position instead of a draw white wins by 53.Re8! Rb1 threats mate on h1 but the power on a check destroy this delusion. 54.b8=Q+ Rxb8 55.Rxb8 and white is up a rook and this should be a win even among amateurs. :)
Nov-30-17  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <yureesystem>--After 23..b5, I thought that white could still win a piece with 24 Be2. So I plugged the position after 23..b5 into Stockfish and the computer found the amazing (to me, anyway) 24 Bxf7!!

perfidious: <GSM>, I must say 24.Bxf7 is a murderous shot which fairly readily suggests itself, but I am not sure how long it would have taken me to spot the idea had you not mentioned it.

The current game score gives <50.Kg1 Ra2 51.Re1+ Kf4 52.Kh2 Rb2 1/2-1/2>

I think <beatgiant> is right and that something has gone wrong.

50...R to R7 must be a mistake for 50...R to N6. Then the position is still a draw <as long as> Black does not put his king on f4, where it allows White to promote with check.

A final sequence leading to a draw would be:
50... Rb3 or Rb4
51. Re1+ Kd4
52. Kh2 Rb2.

and now
53. Re8 would be met by 53...Rb1, with mating threats.

As it happens, I don't think that that is what Harrwitz played. I think he <did> play 51...Kf4?? and Williams missed that there was a win.
