 | | al wazir: Just the way I would have played it. |
Aug-14-17
 | | al wazir: 23...Qc7 foils the attack. |
Aug-14-17 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: 2 great sacs that I never saw coming. Some real classy play at the end there. |
Aug-14-17
 | | Domdaniel: Rapid game of the century? Well, OK, of the year... |
Aug-14-17 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: Black was okay until click for larger viewQd8. The engine saw those sacs though. Amazing what these GM's can see. |
Aug-14-17
 | | HeMateMe: did this really happen? |
Aug-14-17
 | | OhioChessFan: I can undestand Qd8, wanting to defend the f Pawn, and keeping an eye on e7, but that was what led to the smashing attack. |
Aug-14-17 | | zanzibar: <<al w> Just the way I would have played it.> Ah, but which side? |
Aug-15-17
 | | Honza Cervenka: Poor David. Such a harsh treatment... |
Aug-15-17
 | | tpstar: After 13 ... bxc5, Black has Hanging Pawns on c5 & d5, then they are quickly challenged with 15. e4. One way to play against Hanging Pawns is to force one to advance, trying to weaken their combined power. After 22 ... gxf6, White is a full Rook down! The two passed Pawns are some compensation, but I wonder if this second sacrifice would hold up in a longer time control. After 27. Rh4, trying to hold the second rank with 27 ... Rcc7 or 27 ... Qc7 is met by 28. Bf4, then maybe d5-d6. Great game. |
Aug-15-17
 | | Honza Cervenka: 23...Qd8 was probably a mistake. 23...Qc7 may be the last chance for black defense to hold. |
Aug-15-17 | | ajile: I don't like 8..d5? since now White gets 9.cxd5 and Black gets a weak c pawn on the half open c file. IMO the ..c6 variations are better than this for Black. |

Aug-21-17 | | talwnbe4: Navara was still finished after 23..Qc7 24. Re4 Bg7 25. Rh4 h6 26. Be4 +-6.9 even Stockfish is having trouble analysing this game..

Oct-12-17 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Move 29 would be a nice Monday puzzle (on the "hard" side). |
Feb-24-18 | | AgentX: There were too many wins for it to be a valid puzzle. And Qc7 didn't defend, 18...Nd7 or 20...d3 comes closest to defend. Personally, I feel like 16...d4 and 18...f6 really led to this crushing loss. |

 | | perfidious: An incisive attack in the style of the old masters. |
Apr-18-23 | | Cassandro: I don't think Levon is really focused on making Armenia Great Again anymore. Now that he's become American he's more focused on MACGA (Make American Chess Great Again). |
Apr-18-23 | | nalinw: Well he already played in the US team in the 2022 Olympiad - though Nakamura wasn't in the team (what was the reason?) - and they only came 5th despite having the highest rating by a long way. |
Apr-18-23
 | | HeMateMe: Aronian is a bit old to be an immigrant... |
Apr-18-23
 | | Teyss: These rapid games can have a Romantic era style, without getting into complex debates. Good game, funny pun, would have been even better if Black had been American. But less so if he had been Azerbaijani. |
Apr-18-23
 | | eternaloptimist: 1 of the good things about aronian’s rapid games is that they r more instructive than most GMs classical games! I like how he sacrificed a ♘ for a ♙ to get 2 connected central passed ♙s. Then he sacrificed a ♖ for a ♘ to cripple navara’s ♔side ♙ structure & get the #! Aronian made navara (a 2700+ player) look like an amateur! This is a brilliant game by aronian for sure. I got to meet him @ the St. Louis chess club ~4 or 5 years ago & got his autograph as well |
Apr-18-23
 | | eternaloptimist: Also aronian won this tournament so that speaks volumes for him against a field of players this strong! |
