 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Given that the Bc8 causes so much grief for Black in so many openings, no surprise that Caro gets rid of it at his earliest opportunity--a major theme of the CK consists of making this piece either useful or exchanged. However, a concrete analysis of the position leads one to play 5...h5 first. Still, can't get too harsh with Black, seeing as the opening he and Mr. Kann studied did help me become a master in the far off distant past. |
|
Jul-06-18 | | sfm: Resigning again??
It is the easiest move. No need to speculate, try to get ideas, being creative, tricky, inventing traps etc. in your bad position.
No, the board is tilted, let's throw it all away. Why not try 25.bxN,Rb5 26.Ka3,RxQ 27.pxR ?
Sure, 27.-,Rg8 is a bit nasty, as, to cover g2, both 28.Rd2,Bb4 and 28.Re2,RxN are unplayable. So instead we try 28.Rf1 first. White's pieces are all healthy, and there is certainly no immediate win for Black. And if there was, let him demonstrate it. Maybe we could learn something. The following excercise would be possible:
Evaluate the position in a strong silicon monster.
Find all positions that Fischer, Tal, Aljechine (not to mention Marshall!) had over time which an equally bad evaluation.
Now see how many points they got by not resigning. Less than 10%, even on that level, would surprise me. Well, 10% difference in score is the difference betwen "on the top" or "near the top". Or put the position in the computer, and check out your score with Black. 80%? 50%? Thanks to David here, who often did just that, which was a great demonstration of the difficulties of winning a won position. I wonder if I managed to win 50% of those position at first try. I bother to sing this song again, as this "correct to resign"-thing should defitely not be taught as a "fine, noble, decent and correct behavior" to any player, said this old owl & ex chess-teacher. We _will_ make head-shaking moves, but this does not prevent us from having world-class fighting spirit. As I believe I have written earlier, the above does not include playing on without really trying, with the primary intention being to waste the opponents time. And of course people may have better things to do than to fight bad and lost chess positions. Resign, and socialize with your good friends, read a good book, go play football. That makes a lot of sense, just not from a from a pure "I am a chess-player" perspective. |

 | | Richard Taylor: Good game. The Caro is a good opening. I tried it twice in tournaments and I won one and lost the other. In the one I lost my opponent played an unusual variation (to me) and tried to attack when it was silly to do so. It is difficult to play against and some lines are similar to the Centre-Counter. Caro was a good player also. |

Jul-06-18 | | sfm: So, you are playing Black is the position where White resigned. If you "click for larger view" below you can copy the FEN string. click for larger viewThen visit
https://lichess.org/editor/
and past it in to the FEN field and hit [Enter]. You should now see the final position. Click "Flip Board" if you need, and "Continue from here". Select "Play with the machine", and select the Stockfish strenght you want. In this for White resignable position level "8" should be fine, right? :-) Now click on the Black king. The computer will play 1.bxa3. Now, see if you can demonstrate that even a very good White player definitely would not save half a point against you by playing on. Best wishes! |

This is off-topic, but an answer is clearly needed. Hello, Offramp.
Can't quite detect if you are kitting - is so, funny.
"Smoke billows from the USB ports." :-)
However, if you should really have trouble with your PC... I have checked out if LiChess.com gives reason for concern. Doing such checks is a part of my profession. The jury is out on an answer.
Virustotal - a Google projct - gives the site a clean status, here:
https://www.virustotal.com/en/url/0... but that does not prove anything conclusively.
I have googled further. There are reports about people experiencing trouble - like the below, but this also does not prove anything. A double-digit percentage of the computers in the world are infected (Sweden ranking lowest with only 20%, China tops with 47%) The _time_ where people experience trouble rarely has no relation to the _source_ of the problem. If you kiss a girl and get a fever one minut later, the girl is not the source of the infection. My strong impression is that lichess.org is fully safe. Most likely you run a Windows PC as a user with administrator rights. More than 90% of such PCs I encounter in my work are infected. AntiVirus is worthless, and is in my opinion (and many other professional) simply snake oil.
I manage hundreds of computers, and run antivirus on none of them.
See e.g.
https://blog.barkly.com/ransomware-...
with the statement:
"In a recent survey we conducted with 60 companies who suffered successful ransomware attacks during the last 12 months, 100% reported they were running antivirus at the time of the attack. "
It even makes your PC _less_ secure.
https://arstechnica.com/information...
The comments are interesting too.
To protect yourself better:
When you get your new PC, immediately made a standard (non-admin) user, and run as that user. Be extremely careful before typing in the admin password. It helps a lot. These statements are facts:
If you run as administrator:
cracks will infect your PC on OS-level. One wrong mouse-click is enough. When this happens, total reinstallation of Windows is the only cure, something which is almost impossible to do for most people.
People think they can google for something, install it - and something will protect them.
Or they fall for the cheap tricks "Your Flashplayer needs updating, click here". If you run as standard user (without using the admin password):
your PC can not be infected on OS-level.
If the user is infected, creating a new user will give you a clean PC to work on. A huge difference. Unfortunately this is unknown for most normal PC users.
They buy their PC, run as admin and most private users devaluate it within a few months, by getting pwned (cracker slang). This will be latin to some people. But we chessplayers are smarter, right? :-)
Good luck. |
