MissScarlett: Sorry, but what is <vulture wind>?

<The quote is about the negative consequences of our choices.>

So it could equally apply to every lost game.

The pun is neither apt, nor a gem. And don't get me started on the quality of the game itself and whether it deserves to be here. Who are these players?

Totally agree.

This game is garbage.

I mean, what sort of internet debris like this even gets on chessgames.com let alone the distinction of “Game of the Day”!?

And I’ve never heard of these two guys either!

The pun is crap!

The game is crap!

And the losing player is crap!

May-20-20  Brenin: <MissScarlett>: Vulture Wind is a version of Hickory Wind, adapted by the Byrds for use in the desert states of the USA. Or so I'm told.
May-20-20  jith1207: <Pun makes no sense at all, but I'm not going to worry about it>

Well, Hear, Hear.

May-20-20  jith1207: So, this opening is rarely played and because of that, it's outdated and a crap game?

Those who are saying it's crap, did you know how to play this variation and point out what went horribly wrong?

Should the gotd feature only well rated players?

keypusher: This was a very good game by one of us. :-)

In our other game, by contrast, the opening went well for me, but she still ground me down.

S Thomson vs S Hosea, 2009

As for the pun, I'm with OCF re "Vulture," but the reference to the Book of Hosea is pretty good.

May-20-20  Nasruddin Hodja: Wow. I knew right at the beginning that this was one of my hard-to-understand geek puns, so I am astounded that it made GOTD. The GOTD voters are worse than I thought. ;-)

Fusilli: Here's an idea for those who complain about the pun or the quality of the game: How about being more relaxed and a bit kinder? The two players featured in the game are users of this website and good contributors to it. Why can't they get a little tribute by promoting one of their games? As if it was the first time you looked at a chess game that you evaluate to be beneath you.

playground player: The Black Queen sort of put herself out of the picture, didn't she?
May-20-20  morfishine: <Fusilli> Good point! Here <Open Defence> should be roundly applauded for her positional crush over <keypusher>

but in <KP>'s defense, playing the Benoni (as black) is like skating on thin ice, one false move, and its all over, even when it doesn't look or feel that way up to the point it happens

The only query I would have is how did this end up like this in a correspondence format?

I think thats the real question

Interesting game though

scormus: <Fusilli> and <morfishine> good calls.

Glad you made them, so I don't have to. I might not have been as tactful as you were!

  MissScarlett: <morfishine: <Fusilli> Good point!>

Hypocritical bilge-water. Nobody has rubbished GOTDs on both counts more than you.

Upon reflection, I may have been a tad harsh. I hadn't processed the <Hosea> link, so I suppose, being generous, I could award the pun 2/10.

As to the game quality, in and of itself, I don't have an issue - I'm objecting to the use of this site as a vanity publishing project. None of the games of these players meet the criteria for inclusion here, nor have any other redeeming value and so should be summarily exorcised. OK, Kasparov vs S Thomson, 2003 can stay.

Look at some of the efforts I have here--in plain English, not what I should call wonderful. No use messing about; those games are beneath what I consider my standard of play.

Signed, life 1200 player

May-20-20  Nasruddin Hodja: Miss Scarlett: If it's any comfort, I did not know that either player posted on chessgames.com when I proposed the pun/title, so if voting it in was a vanity project, it wasn't with my intentional cooperation.

Lets not overdo it <MissCarlett> I was just trying to see both sides of this game

I hardly even stop in over here anymore, get with the times

keypusher: I could be misremembering, but I think the only games of mine that I uploaded here were the Figler and Kasparov debacles, which both qualify. But Sangeeta is a fine player and I'm happy to have two games against her on cg.com. Especially if they provide Nasruddin H. with pun fodder and <Miss Scarlett> with a chance to be beastly. Everybody (except me) wins!

Check It Out: <keypusher> Merely by fact of having a game uploaded here (with Kasparov no less) makes you a winner. <Open Defense> is a chess warrior and it was an exciting game; certainly no worse than many a GM vs GM game in this database.

I hope you realize your unfettered hostility and bitter attacks say more about you than anyone else. Have you tried anger management therapy?

Go on and keep posting anonymous attacks on decent people on the Internet. Keep teaching the world about character.

keypusher: <CIO> Thanks! <Fusilli> Thank you, too. <MissScarlett> is a very knowledgeable chess historian who has contributed a lot to this site, along with a fair amount (perhaps a lakeful or two) of bile. If the likes of <Phony Benoni> can bear with him, I can do no less. O W Field vs O Tenner, 1922
May-21-20  morfishine: The player of the Black pieces <keypusher> deserves a lot of praise for risking a Benoni here

I can't think of any player who regularly used the Benoni, except maybe Joel Benjamin. All the greats dabbled in it, but it never became associated with like Karpov and the Caro-Kann or Fischer and the Nadjorf, correct me if I'm wrong.

To me, the Benoni is more of a surprise weapon looking for tactics, which is what <6...Nd6> steers us toward, maybe it was something prepared, looking for tactics

<Fusilli> Thank you!

May-21-20  TheBish: DeFirmian regularly played the Modern Benoni, playing 2...e6 first (I presume to avoid the four pawns attack). He didn't have great results with it, at least not against top competition.
May-21-20  morfishine: <TheBish> Thanks

Open Defence: just to clarify why I submitted this game to <Cg.com> I thought the move 12.d6 was interesting

If only blunder free games are to be submitted this site would have a lot less interesting games <IMHO>
