Jun-26-05  Knight13: I think 41... e4?? is a mistake. Better would've been ...Kd5, which Black might get a draw.

By move 41, White has a big and maybe winning advantage because the passed b-pawn can decoy Black's king away from the kingside.

For example, on the suggested 41...Kd5, White plays 42. b4. Then if Black's king retreats with 42...Kd6 43. Kc4 Kc6 44. b5+ Kb6 45. Kd5 Kxb5 46. Kxe5 f4 47. Kf6, etc. White's king will reach the kingside first and wipe out Black's pawns.

Or if 41...Kd5 42. b4 e4 43. fxe4+ Kxe4 44. Kc4, Black can't stop the b-pawn or queen his own pawn in time.

So I think the game was probably lost a long time before move 41.

  beatgiant: Is 33...Ke6 any better?

At first glance, it looks like it might go 33...Ke6 34. Kd2 Kd5 35. Kc3 Na2+ 36. Kb3 Nc1+ 37. Kb4! so that 37...Nd3+ 38. Kb5, and the c-pawn can't be stopped. White would still win.

16...b6, weakening the queenside, looks dubious. He probably did that to undermine White's possible knight post of Nd6. But how about instead 16...Nh4, trading off the dangerous knight?

Jun-26-05  Knight13: <beatgiant> That's true. I let my chess computer play the game from move 41 and Black lost. Like you said, White wiped out Black's pawns. :)
