Dec-07-18  Rama: I tried Nxf6+ and Qxd6 to get to the back rank but that way didn't work. White's Nb3! was much superior.
Dec-07-18  thisisasign: I've never seen this game before. What an amazing combination by Korchmar!
Dec-07-18  SometimesGood: <Strelets: I would add David Bronstein, Eduard Gufeld, Efim Geller, and Leonid Stein to the list of players whose best games are more deserving of the label of "Ukrainian Immortal." Don't get me wrong; this is still an excellent game. But it just doesn't dazzle the mind and eyes like the best work of the aforementioned players.> Interesting list!
Dec-07-18  drollere: poor me. i went for Bxg7.

Jimfromprovidence: 21...g5, below, (or 25...g6) look like they might work defensively.

But white wins with 22 Rge3 as the bishop intervention 22...Bd7 loses to 23 Qxd7, etc. below.

<Luzhin> first mentioned 21...g6 back in 2007.

Dec-07-18  landshark: Weird moves sometimes are the right moves - ?
After staring fruitlessly at this for way too long I settled on the try Nb4, attacking the R on a3 while simultaneously threatening Qxd6 where if the Q is recaptured mate follows starting with Rd8. None of which I cross checked very much. Hmmmm....

Dec-07-18  5hrsolver: Got this one. But it took at least 5 hrs. One interesting line is

19. Nb4 axb4 20. Qxd6 Qd7 21. Qd5 g6 22. Rge3

And it's either mate or lose a lot of material.

plang: <Domdaniel: Very pretty ... but as <delboy> said, not especially deep. I saw the Queen sac on d6 coming well in advance.>

Geez - tough crowd. I saw the queen sac too but I did not see 19 Nb4 or 21 Qd5 - when the queen sac is only the 4th or 5th best move in the game that is saying something.

Jun-22-19  Eopithecus: I found this same game with a date of 1931 and the black player's first name is Abram. Anyone have any ideas about which is correct
Feb-02-21  TheBish: <Eopithecus: I found this same game with a date of 1931 and the black player's first name is Abram. Anyone have any ideas about which is correct>

Where did you find that? I did a Google search with the FEN (diagram position, click the b8 square) at move 19, as I figured it must be in some game position database. The first page came up with https://www.chessbox.in/chessgame/k... (Korschmar-Poljak), so I'm convinced this is accurate.

Mar-24-21  thelegendisback: wow this is one of the most insane combos i've ever seen!

  0ZeR0: A truly monumental conception.
Nov-21-21  ndg2: As several people have pointed out, there are couple of games by Ukrainian players who would be more deserving of the "Immortal" moniker.

I think the idea here is that _both_ players are born in the Ukraine, not just the winner.

Mar-03-22  Immortal Gambit: Nice game.
